Star-Studded Collaborations with World-Class Artists

The celebration will witness the convergence of musical brilliance, as the Hallé Orchestra collaborates with world-renowned percussionist Colin Currie, hailed as ‘the world’s finest and most daring percussionist’ by The Spectator.

Adding to the stellar lineup is Jonny Greenwood, the iconic guitarist of Radiohead, whose diverse musical genius promises to infuse a modern edge into Reich’s timeless compositions.

The Royal Northern College of Music Orchestra

The ensemble will also feature the prodigious talents of young musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music and Chetham’s School of Music, creating a harmonious blend of experience and youthful vibrancy.

A Journey Through Steve Reich’s Percussive Universe

Born and raised in New York and California, Steve Reich‘s musical odyssey has consistently explored the diverse soundscapes offered by percussion.

The festival will showcase over ten major works, including Reich’s grand masterpieces like ‘The Desert Music‘ and ‘Four Sections‘. Notable smaller works, such as ‘Music for Pieces of Wood‘ and ‘Mallet Quartet‘, the latter written for and performed by Colin Currie at sold-out concerts in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, will also be featured.

Resonating Across Generations

Steve Reich’s profound influence extends far beyond his compositions, resonating with younger generations of composers, musicians, and artists worldwide.

The festival reflects the enduring impact of Reich’s work on the contemporary music scene, with his compositions continuing to inspire and shape the artistic landscape across the World.

Musical Icons and Multimedia Marvels

The concerts promise an eclectic mix of musical experiences, from tens of thousands hearing Jonny Greenwood perform ‘Electric Counterpoint‘ at Glastonbury Festival to the reprisal of the 2019 multimedia work ‘Reich/Richter‘.

This mesmerising composition, crafted for a film by visual artist Gerhard Richter and filmmaker Corinna Belz, has garnered acclaim through over 100 live performances.

The fusion of Reich’s auditory brilliance with Richter’s visual artistry creates an immersive and unforgettable multisensory experience.

Steve Reich’s Perspective

In anticipation of the festival, Steve Reich shared his excitement, stating, “From orchestra, chorus, ensemble, chamber, and film down to two pairs of bare hands, this festival is certainly comprehensive.

“Given the participation of musicians like Colin Currie and Jonny Greenwood, as well as the work of visual artist Gerhard Richter, this promises to be a magnetically attractive event.”

Colin Currie’s Insight

Colin Currie, renowned percussionist and collaborator, expressed the unique connection between Steve’s music and the vibrant Manchester cultural scene.

He highlighted the compelling nature of presenting this music in the acoustically optimised surroundings of The Bridgewater Hall and Hallé St Peter’s, emphasising the Hallé Orchestra’s depth of sound and flexibility as ideal for delivering a truly unique set of concerts.

Manchester X Steve Reich – a Match Made in Heaven?
