Bolton Firefighters Training The Christie Charity

This Sunday (October 20th), the crew will scale the towering staircase of an iconic Manchester skyscraper to raise funds for The Christie Charity, which provides crucial support to cancer patients and their families.

The firefighters, all trained for high-rise emergencies, see this event as a unique opportunity to put their skills to the test while raising money for a cause close to their hearts.

What is the Beetham Tower Challenge

After coming across the fundraiser on social media, the team eagerly joined the event, launching a JustGiving page to rally support.

Leading the charge is Ryan Bailey, 38, a seasoned firefighter with 16 years of service.

Ryan, alongside his fellow crew members Mark Bottomley (from Warrington), Nick Rayner (from Bolton), and Craig Travis (from Middleton), will take on the physically demanding task of climbing 798 steps, spanning 171 meters to the top of the skyscraper.

Friends and family will be there to cheer them on every step of the way.

Speaking ahead of the challenge, Ryan said, “It seemed like something out of the ordinary, but also a chance for us to work together as a team.

“Plus, where else in Manchester can you do an event like this and stay sheltered from the rain?!

“We’re used to training for high-rise fires, but this will be a different test of endurance.

“Next year, we’re considering doing it in full uniform.

“But for now, it’s all about raising funds for an amazing cause, which is the main thing.”

The Christie Charity’s fundraising event has attracted many supporters, and the Bolton crew’s participation has brought extra attention to the cause.

Kevin Harmer, mass participation officer at The Christie Charity, expressed his gratitude: “We’re thrilled to see such strong support from the Bolton fire crew.

“Their dedication to fundraising for The Christie Charity is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to cheer them on as they take on this incredible challenge.”

How the Christie helps cancer patients
