There’s something special about playing for your hometown club—just ask Elia McCormick.
Born and raised in Manchester, she’s been part of Manchester Thunder’s setup since she was fourteen, climbing the ranks from academy hopeful to Superleague player.
Now, after years of hard work, injury setbacks, and sheer determination, she’s finally getting her chance to shine on one of the biggest stages in netball: the AO Arena.
Manchester Thunder vs Loughborough Lightning
From the moment she first picked up a netball in primary school, Elia was hooked. “I was always into sport,” she said. “My parents were really sporty, and I tried loads of different things growing up. But netball just clicked.”
She loved the team dynamic, something she felt was missing in other sports she dabbled in. “It’s the togetherness. You win together, you lose together, and you push each other to be better. I love that.”
For McCormick, playing for Thunder is deeply connected to her love for Manchester—it’s about carrying the city’s energy, history, and passion onto the court. “I’m Manchester through and through,” she said proudly. “I’ve been with Thunder since I was a kid, and I don’t see myself playing anywhere else. The people, the coaches, the girls—it feels like home.”
Playing at the AO Arena
The upcoming AO Arena match against Loughborough Lightning is a big deal, but for McCormick, it’s personal. “I’ve been in the squad for years, but because of injuries, I’ve never actually played in this game,” she explained. “I’ve always been on the sidelines, watching the team battle it out in front of thousands of fans. Now, it’s finally my turn to have a go and I can’t wait!”
The AO Arena holds a special place in her heart, beyond just netball. “I’ve been going to gigs there since I was little—Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, you name it. So, to now be playing there? It’s surreal.” She laughs, adding, “Even just being in the changing rooms, knowing the same space has been used by global superstars? That’s mad.”
Bouncing back from injury
McCormick’s journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. In 2022, just as she was hitting her stride, she suffered a brutal ACL injury that took her out for the entire season. “It was devastating,” she admitted. “I knew recovery would be long, but the worst part wasn’t the rehab—it was missing out on being part of the team. Training alone, watching from the sidelines—it was tough.”
But she never lost focus. “I knew I’d be back. It was just about pushing through, taking it one day at a time, and keeping my eyes on the bigger picture.” Now, fully recovered and ready to make her mark, McCormick is raring to get back on court. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for so long. I just want to get out there and play.”
Why you should give netball a go
McCormick is passionate about growing the sport and getting more people involved in netball—whether as players or fans. “I think a lot of people underestimate how fast and exciting netball actually is,” she said. “If you’ve only seen it in a school sports hall, you have no idea what you’re missing.”
She insists netball is for everyone. “It’s such a great way to keep fit, and it’s brilliant for mental health. If you don’t like the gym, netball gives you a proper workout without feeling like a chore. Plus, you meet amazing people and become part of a team.”
Her advice? “Just give it a try! Whether you want to compete or just have fun, you’ll get hooked.”
AO Arena magic
Thunder’s season opener against Loughborough Lightning isn’t just any game—it’s a rematch of last year’s Grand Final, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. “Every time we play them, it’s a battle,” McCormick says. “Both teams want to start the season with a statement, and with thousands of fans there, the atmosphere is going to be unreal.”
She urges Mancunians to come and experience it for themselves. “It’s not just a match—it’s an event. The AO Arena is right in the city centre, so make a day of it. Get your mates together, support your local team, and enjoy a proper high-energy sporting spectacle.”
For McCormick, this game isn’t just about winning points—it’s about proving that after everything she’s been through, she’s back and ready to make an impact. “I’ve waited so long for this moment. Now, it’s time to make it count.”
And for Manchester Thunder fans, that’s a promise worth getting excited about.
