THAIKHUN Spinningfields is now OPEN. The wait is over, and we went in unannounced on the opening day (Monday 26 May).

“a little slice of Khaosan Road right here in Manchester.”

The first thing you need to know about Thaikhun is that the way it is pronounced is seriously relevant. Spoken like ‘tycoon’, the authentic Thai street food venue to open on The Avenue in Spinningfields is definitely a hot shot in the food world what with it’s relaxed approach to dining.

From the CHaophraya Group, Thaikhun is also run by our favourite type of entrepreneur: a passionate one. Kim Kaewkraikhot is not only joint owner of the Thai Leisure Company but a chef who once owned her own restaurant in Bangkok itself.

For the Thaikhun venture we’re talking real raw energy and passion for a culture so different from ours, funnelled into the food. Because that’s what this is really about, right? Food, food, food (and maybe a few beers too). Share and share alike.

When we speak to Thaikhun, they are absolutely brimming over with pride for the dishes that you yourself will be able to try now. It’s all fresh and all healthy with absolutely no ghee butter or MSG used in anything, and they’re completely committed to the idea that the culture of Thailand as well as the cuisine will be a heavy influence.

This seriously buzzing, chilled out and intensely thematic space will be the site for those of you who have been to Thailand, or just dream of going, to live out your fantasies. You’ll be fed Kim’s creations of light soups, and grilled meats along with noodle dishes and traditional Thai curries in a surrounding peppered with lanterns and wooden furniture. It’s a little slice of Khaosan Road right here in Manchester.

The most rustic and authentic of surroundings, sourced straight from Thailand. Exposed wires wrapped around poles (anything), like they do in Thailand – only safe! Portraits and ‘plinky plonky’ souvenirs and ornaments. There’s also a shop selling ingredients and a theatre kitchen with chefs guest table (stools). You can get a quick takeaway too, with their ‘Thai-Go’ section.

Whether you’re passing by after work on your way home to relax or tight for time during a busy day in the office. Simply pop in to Thaikhun, choose your Thai Street Food from the selection of pre-packaged goodies, pay and away you go. ‘Grab & Go’…

“My passion is to bring authentic Thai dishes from the streets of Bangkok to the streets of the UK,” says Kim, “I am really looking forward to sharing more signature dishes transported all the way from my cooking roots in Thailand.”

Those cooking roots mean great things for our taste buds. Kim’s dishes are famous for being brimming with flavour, and even the cocktails will be infused with her genius brought from across the globe such as mojitos featuring coconut cream and coriander. Kim’s recommended dishes are highlighted in orange on the menu.

The freshest of ingredients and the most rustic of surroundings characterise your next lunchtime out, because who doesn’t want to try the best of Bangkok street food, created and cooked by a woman who has been there, done that and impressed everyone in the real Thailand? Soak up that culture. without splashing out on a plane ticket.

Just what Spinningfields needs.
