In the latest strategic update, Greater Manchester’s Mayor, Andy Burnham, is spearheading efforts to fast-track the introduction of the Metrolink to Stockport, propelling the town into a pivotal role as the primary southern gateway for transport in the region.

A comprehensive plan was discussed during ‘‘Next Stop Stockport’  meeting, outlining ambitious projects to solidify Stockport’s position in Greater Manchester’s transportation network.

Stockport Metrolink Station

The meeting underscored Mayor Burnham’s commitment to establishing a robust business case for the Metrolink extension within the next 12 months.

Additionally, Stockport is now an integral part of Greater Manchester’s priority stations initiative, collaborating with Network Rail and TfGM to elevate its status.

The ‘Next Stop Stockport’ vision gained support through the formation of alliances among key stakeholders, marking a significant step forward.

When Will Stockport Metrolink Station Open?

Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, highlighted the town’s recent triumphs in revitalising the town centre and upgrading existing infrastructure.

With a focus on accommodating over 7,000 new residents in the vicinity of the station, Hunter stressed the imperative need for 21st-century transport infrastructure to inspire future generations.

The forthcoming multi-million-pound Transport Interchange, set to open in March next year, is strategically designed to seamlessly integrate the Metrolink.

Masterplan for Stockport Town Centre West

Eamonn Boylan, interim chair of Stockport MDC, elaborated on the master plan for Town Centre West, emphasising the creation of a residential neighbourhood boasting exceptional transport connectivity.

Recognising Stockport Rail Station as a crucial economic asset with vital links to various cities, Boylan expressed the longstanding ambition to enhance Stockport’s role as the transport hub for the south of Greater Manchester.

Boylan commended the collaborative efforts of business leaders, developers, and political figures, citing them as instrumental in propelling Stockport toward its transportation ambitions.

Mayor Andy Burnham echoed this sentiment, praising Stockport’s ongoing transformation and the imminent launch of the new transport interchange. Burnham emphasised the development of compelling business cases for Metrolink and the town’s railway station, foreseeing substantial social and economic benefits.
