In 2004, a small group of parents in South Manchester came together with a shared mission: to create a safe and supportive space where families of children with Down’s syndrome could connect, share advice, and grow stronger together.

What began as a grassroots effort by local parents has grown into the South Manchester Down’s Syndrome Support Group (SMDSSG), a thriving charity that serves as a lifeline for families across Manchester, offering not only practical support but a sense of community and hope.

As CEO Esther Whitaker shared: “SMDSSG started because a group of parents saw a need. They wanted to create a space where they could support each other, exchange advice, and just be understood.

“It was a small group then, but today, we’re so much more—our families, individuals, and their supporters are thriving together, and that’s what makes SMDSSG so special.”

One of SMDSSG’s most beloved offerings is the Chatterbox Club.

This monthly gathering is a home away from home for many families, offering everything from yoga to Makaton sing-and-sign, specialised speech and occupational therapy, arts and crafts, games, and peer-to-peer support.

Esther said: “A parent once told me they wish they could bottle the feeling of Chatterbox. It’s indescribable. It’s an uplifting, fun, positive event—a one-stop shop where families can come and access so much support, all in one morning and in one place, with their whole family. It’s become a true highlight for everyone involved.”

Esther explains that the impact of Chatterbox goes beyond just activities; it’s about the progress and milestones reached within that space. “We have witnessed so many special moments,” she shared.

“We’ve seen younger members use their first sign, learn a new word, or develop their social skills. Some have taken their first steps, others have dressed themselves for the first time, and it’s amazing to see children reach these huge milestones.

“It’s a privilege to be part of each member’s journey and to celebrate every achievement along the way.”

A life-changing impact

SMDSSG’s work often touches families at their most vulnerable moments. Esther shares a story about their pre-school group, which has been transformative for many. “One family came to us after a surprise diagnosis,” she said.

“They were quiet and held back at first. But after just a few sessions, they told us how meeting others and being part of a community had completely changed their outlook. They felt hopeful and could finally see the bright future that lay ahead for their child.”

These connections offer reassurance to families, helping them see the possibilities and joys in each milestone, big and small.

“Our community isn’t just about providing services; it’s about offering a sense of hope and understanding that only those who’ve walked the same path can truly provide,” Esther explained.

SMDSSG’s Youth Advocacy Group

One of SMDSSG’s newest projects, the Youth Advocacy Group, is empowering young people with Down’s syndrome to find their voices. Though it’s only held a few meetings, Esther has already seen the group’s potential: “The Youth Advocacy Group has gone from strength to strength,” she said.

“Each member has been given time and space to explore and communicate their feelings about things that matter to them. Their confidence is growing, friendships are forming, and they’re learning life skills—like how meetings work, navigating agendas, and sharing ideas. It’s incredible to watch.”

Through their connection with the National Down Syndrome Policy Group, these young advocates are influencing broader conversations around Down’s syndrome, including discussions about the Down Syndrome Act.

“Important changes that our members want to see are starting to emerge,” Esther added. “They’re making connections and finding confidence that they’ll carry into the future.”

SMDSSG’s holiday clubs

SMDSSG’s holiday clubs are another transformative initiative for local families.

These week-long, play-based programs focus on helping children with Down’s syndrome make progress in English and maths while forming friendships and developing independence. The success of this program has been astounding, with many parents reporting that their children had never attended a holiday club until now.

“We had quite a few children who were left at a club for the first time ever,” Esther said. “Their confidence grew throughout the week, and friendships blossomed. Parents told us their children would wake up excited, asking for the holiday club and happily waving goodbye at the door. It was such a joy to see them so engaged and independent.”

One parent even reported that their child’s reading and communication skills improved so much that teachers noticed a difference when he returned to school after the summer.

Expanding and growing The South Manchester Down’s Syndrome Support within the community

For Esther and the SMDSSG team, the work is far from done. With over 90 events planned for this year, they’re focused on reaching more families and developing new programs to meet the needs of Manchester’s Down’s syndrome community.

“We strive for a world where people with Down’s syndrome are supported and celebrated,” Esther explained.

“We’re hoping to repeat the holiday club next summer and are exploring a Family Support Worker role to provide even more resources for families, subject to funding.”

In November, SMDSSG will also launch a new brand designed to reflect the charity’s growth and future aspirations. “We want to future-proof SMDSSG,” Esther said, “to ensure we’re here to support families and individuals for years to come.”

Creating a Legacy of Love and Inclusion

As SMDSSG continues to grow, its legacy becomes clearer: this is an organisation rooted in love, driven by community, and focused on creating a more inclusive world for people with Down’s syndrome. “We’re not just providing services,” Esther reflected. “We’re building a community where every member, every family, feels they have a place and a purpose.”

For families across Manchester, SMDSSG is a source of hope, celebration, and unwavering support.

Whether it’s through the joy of Chatterbox Club, the empowerment of the Youth Advocacy Group, or the learning and independence fostered at the holiday clubs, SMDSSG is creating spaces where people can thrive. And for anyone looking to join this remarkable community, the doors are open—welcoming you to be part of something truly special.
