Manchester’s musical talent

Manchester has always been a breeding ground for musical talent, and the latest sensation to emerge from the city is none other than Scapegrace.

This dynamic quartet, consisting of Isaac on bass, Tilly on vocals, Alfie on drums, and Matt on guitar, has quickly become a force to be reckoned with.

Fronted by the charismatic Tilly, the band’s youthful energy and raw talent have captured the attention of fans and industry veterans alike.

BIMM music college in Manchester

Their journey began at BIMM music college in Manchester, where fate brought them together last September.

The moment they met, it was clear that something extraordinary was about to unfold.

Fuelled by a shared passion for music, the band members formed an instant bond and embarked on a journey that would redefine their lives.

Under the guidance of their college tutor, they were placed in a performance class, and that’s when the magic truly began.

The synergy between them was undeniable, and they soon realised they were more than just classmates – they were destined to be a band.

In February of this year, Scapegrace was officially formed, and they wasted no time in making their mark.

Shaun Ryder

Their breakout moment came when they appeared on Mancunia TV, catching the discerning ear of none other than Shaun Ryder from the iconic Manchester band, The Happy Mondays.

The recognition was a game-changer, as Scapegrace secured the opportunity to support The Happy Mondays in exclusive U.K. shows next year.

It’s a testament to their immense talent and the impact they’ve already made in such a short time.

But the accolades didn’t stop there. Their new single, “Cigarettes and Party Sex” made waves when it was played on Judgement Jukebox by Dawn Parry on 365 Radio.

Steve ‘Smiley’ Barnard

The excitement reached new heights when industry heavyweights like renowned record producer the illustrious Steve ‘Smiley’ Barnard, known for his work with Mock Turtles and Robbie Williams, had their ears tuned in.

As a result, Scapegrace will be collaborating with ‘Smiley’ Barnard at his esteemed studio in September to record their material.

We sat down with the members of Scapegrace—Tilly, Isaac, Matt, and Alfie— who opened up about their journey, creative process, BIMM experience, and their exciting plans for the future.

With their fusion of alternative rock, 90s angst, and captivating stage presence, Scapegrace is carving their own path in the music industry.

Tilly, the powerhouse vocalist, recalls her unwavering passion for music, stating, “From being a toddler to going through primary school, I’ve always known that pursuing a career in music is what I’m supposed to do. It’s the only thing that has ever truly captivated me.” Her commitment to the craft is evident in their original song, “Devil,” which came to life in an extraordinary way.

Songwriting process

Isaac, the talented bass player, shares the genesis of “Devil” and its evolution.

“We were at Tame the River studio, wrapping up some live video recordings of our songs when inspiration struck. Matt played the introductory guitar riff, and the ideas just flowed. We knew we wanted a powerful and dramatic song, and after a few weeks of adjustments, we had our final product.”

The song’s simplicity and dark undertones provided the canvas for Tilly’s compelling lyrics, delving into the fiery, tumultuous relationship between two individuals.

When asked about their time at BIMM Manchester, the band unanimously credits the institution for shaping their musical abilities and refining their stage presence. Isaac explains, “BIMM really kickstarted us as a band. It was the common ground where we found each other, despite coming from different musical backgrounds. It helped us discover ‘our sound’ and enhanced our visual performance, ensuring that each element and instrument shines through.”

Supporting the Happy Mondays

Matt, the talented guitarist, recalls the exhilarating moment when they found out they would be supporting Happy Mondays. “I was in the middle of getting a haircut when I received the news. I was over the moon. As soon as I finished, I ran outside and called the band. We were all ecstatic about the opportunity!” The band’s hard work and dedication had paid off, leading to this milestone.

Having their new single, “Devil,” played on Judgement Jukebox by Dawn Perry on 365 Radio was a defining moment for Scapegrace. Isaac describes the experience, saying, “Hearing our song on the radio and receiving feedback from industry professionals was incredible. The presenters seemed to enjoy it, and that felt amazing. It’s validating to know that our music resonates with others.”

Alfie, the dynamic drummer, eagerly anticipates their collaboration with producer Smiley. “We’re looking forward to working with him. Smiley really enjoyed our song ‘Cigs’ and ‘Devil,’ so we’re excited to record it with him. He’s a brilliant producer, and we can’t wait to meet him in person.”

Describing their musical style, Tilly shares, “Scapegrace is a fusion of alternative rock with a 90s angst. Our sound echoes through scratchy guitar lines, a jumping rhythm section, and a touch of 70s rock. We don’t like to be confined to a single genre—we strive to incorporate elements that everyone can enjoy.”

When it comes to balancing their BIMM commitments and the band, the members find a harmonious blend. Isaac explains, “It’s all very convenient for us. We have regular band rehearsals, and BIMM provides us access to amazing equipment. Performing in front of our peers at BIMM also helps us fine-tune our craft and overcome any stage nerves.”

Looking ahead to the summer, the band is buzzing with excitement. Matt exclaims, “We have plenty of gigs lined up, including the highly anticipated Neck of the Woods Fest in Levenshulme. Sharing the stage with artists like Dermo and Alex Spencer is a dream come true. We absolutely can’t wait for it!”
