Manchester-born Raphaella Julien made a mighty impact in the show Work it Out when it was staged last March.

Her character used BSL in the play, and in terms of representation, it meant that audience members could feel seen.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Raphaella’s next show pushes this boundary further.

Follow the Signs is performed through BSL, rap, spoken English, movement, and creative captioning.

The idea is that Deaf and hearing audience members can watch and celebrate this show and the messages it carries, together.

Raphaella Julien

In her words: “In this show, we break down the fourth wall.”  We caught up with Raphaella who performs in the show to learn more.

Why do you think representation on stage and screen is so important?

Representation is so important because this is something we needed when we were younger, to help us navigate the intersectionality of our identities. Hopefully, this show will encourage the next generation to open up – be vulnerable, accept who they are and validate their experiences too.

What attracted you to Follow the Signs?

The vibe this has is hip hop music, rapping, dancing and the merge of two languages which are spoken English and BSL through storytelling and – this ticks all of my boxes! Not only that the important subjects and themes in this I can completely relate to it which is why I felt so connected to this beautiful story.

What will it give audiences in terms of something new?

I can tell you for sure this show will Impact and educate the audience for many different reasons and that’s whether you are hearing or deaf or hard of hearing. Whether you’re an older generation or the younger generation. Whether you are a parent or a friend. Whether you are black, white or mixed race and the list goes on … there is something I’m sure you will discover about yourself and that’s beautiful. Welcome it.

What do you love about Manchester?

Well, I was born and raised here it’s my hometown!

You have appeared at HOME before. Do you feel like the name of the place, at home here?

Oh yeah! I love HOME theatre there’s something about this place that gives me the three Cs and that’s the sense of community, comfort, and cosiness!

Who are your favourite rappers and singers?

Alicia keys, Lauryn hill and Stormzy.

Why should audiences follow the signs to First Street and come and see this show?

This theatre feels open-minded and has that warm intimate feel. They also cast more local actors and have a community there to support one another and I really like that. Also with this show, I can guarantee you will have the best time since they have that social space when you arrive, where you can get some food and drinks and relax before the show – not only you are watching a beautiful story, but you are also going want to party! Best believe it!
