As Manchester Women’s Aid (MWA) marks its 50th anniversary, the organisation has a unique opportunity to make an even greater impact on the lives of children and families affected by domestic abuse.
In celebration of this milestone, MWA is participating in the Big Give Women & Girls Match Fund, launching at midday on October 10th and running until October 17th.
This week-long fundraising drive aims to raise £20,000 to revamp the playgrounds at MWA’s four family refuges, offering children a safe and engaging space to play and heal.
Every pound donated during the campaign will be matched, meaning supporters can double their impact on this crucial project.
Manchester Women’s Aid
For Manchester Women’s Aid, the decision to focus on playgrounds this year is especially poignant.
The playgrounds at these refuges haven’t seen an upgrade in over a decade, with some untouched for nearly 20 years.
MWA hopes that transforming these outdoor spaces will open up new worlds for the children who spend time at their refuges, creating safe areas where they can play, learn, and process their emotions through play.
A safe space for every child
Manchester Women’s Aid receives thousands of referrals each year, impacting the lives of over 30,000 adults and children over the past decade.
In 2023 alone, nearly two-thirds of the survivors staying in MWA’s refuges were accompanied by children.
The organisation’s Refuge Manager, Casey Doe, understands the importance of having vibrant, imaginative spaces that can aid children’s recovery.
“Our team provides dedicated support and care to families, but colourful, imaginative play areas could make all the difference for children,” Casey explained.
“Beyond simply a place to play, these areas would also serve as safe spaces for therapeutic sessions where children can communicate and start healing in a child-led environment.
“Being a part of the Big Give is an incredible opportunity, and we’re hopeful that people will contribute to making these playgrounds a reality.”
The Big Give: how to make a difference
Between midday on October 10th and midday on October 17th, donations can be made directly to the Big Give.
Every donation, no matter the size, can contribute to the £20,000 goal, with the first £10,000 matched pound for pound by the fund.
This is a chance for supporters to make a tangible difference, turning their generosity into vibrant, engaging playgrounds for children in need.
50 years of lifesaving support
Since opening its doors in 1974, MWA has grown from a single refuge to a citywide network that includes six refuges and four dispersed properties.
It also provides a range of community-based services across Greater Manchester.
Originally founded by activists Angela Cooper, Kath Caulfield, and Fran Brody, MWA is now part of a national network of 180 organisation under the Women’s Aid umbrella, dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic abuse.
