The little shopfront in the Georgian brick terrace is painted a traditional green. Inside, all is light and airy with white walls, pale wood flooring and cream upholstery. What makes this womenswear shop special is that everything is ethically sourced and made from sustainable natural fabrics with fully traceable footprints: all aspects of supply and manufacture have been considered in order to cut down on unnecessary waste and minimise damage to the environment.

Fabrics include organic cotton from certified farms in Europe, traditionally produced Italian linen, plant-based materials such as bamboo and lyocell (manufactured from wood pulp) and lambswool from free-roaming Scottish sheep. The clothing is made in trusted factories mainly in Portugal or Britain, transported by road and packed in cardboard boxes. Waste is avoided by ordering only as much fabric as is needed, and leather goods are made from offcuts.

The distinctive brand was launched by Mancunian Hannah Beaumont-Laurencia in 2008 with just eight organic cotton T-shirts, and now sells a wide range of original designs online and at retailers all over the world. Hannah opened the Manchester shop in 2017, with the design studio and company office on the first floor. The shop is the only place where you can see her entire collection, including homewares such as baskets and candles. The clothes show that ethical need not mean spartan or frumpy: textures are luxuriously soft, and the styling has the kind of simplicity that comes from sophisticated cutting, combining loose silhouettes with elegant line. There are no frills or lurid colours, and no artificial dyes. Although two seasonal collections are produced each year, the garments are classic in style, designed to be worn again and again - the antithesis of instant throwaway fashion. Beaumont was ahead of the curve in 2008: Will the fashion world ever catch up?
