Actress Laura Littlewood made her Coronation Street debut in 2019, playing journalist Suki.
And ever since then, she has returned to Weatherfield making guest appearances, whenever a local story needs follow-up.
If you are a regular theatregoer in Manchester, you may also recognise Laura from her performances in audience favourites such as Vignettes and JB Shorts. She loves working with local theatre company Her Productions, as they pride themselves in sourcing great roles for women and providing performers with a safe and welcoming space.
Laura is about to work with this innovative company again, starring in Noel Coward’s classic comedy Blithe Spirit, alongside another local performer – Karen Henthorn at The Hope Mill Theatre in Ancoats.
We caught up with Laura to find out more.
Blithe Spirit has a Her Productions twist, is that what attracts you?
A Her Productions project will always be attractive! Hannah Ellis Ryan and her team have produced some really exciting and important work over the years, I’m really happy to be working with this wonderful company again.
What do you like about the theatre scene in Manchester?
We have a very supportive community in Manchester which I feel really lucky to be a part of, especially when I was first starting out.
It’s absolutely bursting with talented creatives, many of which are good friends of mine now. I think in Manchester there’s more freedom to take risks and make bold choices. I have seen some of the most incredible theatre here in my hometown.
How did it feel when you first walked onto the Coronation Street set to play Suki, the intrepid reporter?
It was a very surreal moment—my first-ever episode was filmed on the Rovers Return, one of the most iconic British TV sets!! It was definitely an out-of-body experience!
Are there any plans for you to return to Weatherfield?
When I first auditioned for Coronation Street, it was originally one scene as Suki the journalist. Almost six later, she is still called upon whenever there’s a scandal to be reported! So I’m sure she’ll be back soon.
Blithe Spirit has Noel Coward’s fast paced and waspish wit, is that an exciting challenge for an actor?
It’s the dream job! To work on a classic and a comedy at that, we’re going to have a lot of fun!
The Hope Mill is a great intimate space, as you see the audience face on. Is that scary or brilliant?
Both! I find performing on stage to be exhilaratingly addictive and terrifying all at the same time. The Hope Mill Theatre is a gorgeous venue, I have been lucky enough to perform there a number of times, it will be wonderful to be back.
What do you love about Manchester?
I’m a Manc born and bred, so everything, except the weather!
I love the culture, the music, the community, my gorgeous friends. There’s a warmth and acceptance from Mancunians which is rare and wonderful. Oh, and the coffee shops, Manchester has a plethora of incredible, independent coffee shops which I just adore!
Blithe Spirit is staged quite often but this production is not more of the same. Why would you recommend it to both fans of the show and newcomers?
It’s a Her Productions show, so they’ll be quirks along the way that will keep it feeling fresh. You’re in for a good time, whether you’re a fan of theatre or not and who doesn’t love a comedy? It’s the perfect way to kickstart the New Year!
Blithe Spirit is at the Hope Mill Theatre from 12th – 22nd February and you can book your tickets here
