Manchester is to get another huge theatre exclusive – as hit West End and Broadway musical The Book of Mormon is heading to the city for the first time.

In news that sent theatre fans into something of a frenzy on Monday night, the show’s official Twitter feed broke the news that they are heading to Manchester in 2019.

The post included a photo of a show poster on Manchester’s bustling Portland Street, with the message: “New mission? Mad fer’ it, mate #TheMormonsAreComing.”

The satirical musical, written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q‘s Robert Lopez, has won critical acclaim and an army of fans since debuting on Broadway in 2011, and has already become one of the most successful musicals of all time.

It follows two young and naive Mormon missionaries who leave Salt Lake City to attempt to teach the Mormon religion to the inhabitants of a remote Ugandan village.

But the earnest young men are challenged by the lack of interest from the locals, who have rather bigger problems to contend with.

There’s no word as yet as to which theatre the show will be heading to, although the smart money is on the Palace Theatre, given its proximity to the poster shown in the Twitter photo.

There are also no current dates available to book for the show, but on the Book of Mormon’s official website, fans are encouraged to sign up to “get priority booking information”.

We have approached the Palace Theatre for further information, and as soon as dates are announced, we will be the first to let you know.

The news was greeted with huge excitement from fans of the show, with comments on Twitter including a lot of “OMGs” through to “Yessss, best news ever!!”
