Disney On Ice presents 100 Years of Wonder is a celebration of all things from the house of mouse.
And it brings together Mickey Mouse’s favourite memories, as well as fan favourites, such as the very aptly named Frozen, alongside the brilliant Encanto, delivered by a terrific team of ice skaters.
We caught up with Caitlin Smithurst, who is set to glide across the ice in this spectacular show at the AO Arena this week.
When did you start skating and what got you into the sport?
I started skating 13 years ago at the age of 6, I was inspired by a film Ice Princess which I used to watch with my mum, then I had the lucky coincidence of attending my friends ice-skating birthday party and fell in love with the ice, I begged for lessons and I haven’t stopped since!
From skating lessons, this led me to my career with synchronised skating and Team GB, travelling around the world to compete, but it wasn’t long before I discovered performing in front of a crowd and the buzz it gave me, Disney was without a doubt the next step!
Is it exhilarating to skate so fast across the ice?
Definitely, the ability to glide across the ice fast enables you to shut yourself into your own world of emotions and experience a freedom like. no other – it’s a sensation that cannot be matched and is why skating brings so much joy to all of us here at Disney on Ice.
Which Disney character is your spirit animal and why?
My Disney spirit animal would have to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast, I resonate with her the most as she’s independent, strong willed and caring, and of course her love for books is infectious and definitely a trait I have too.
What is the best thing about being in Disney On Ice?
The best part of being in the cast of Disney on Ice is the joy it brings each and every one of us when delivering entertainment to families in the audience, the reactions from the children watching and interacting with their favourite characters is enchanting. Not to mention the experience to travel the world with your cast mates and all the new adventures it offers – I think we have the best job in the world!
