How to celebrate Chinese New Year in Manchester 2024 – the Year of the Dragon

Lunar New Year marks the arrival of spring and the beginning the lunisolar calendar. This year is the year of the Dragon! Also known as Spring Festival and Chinese New Year, the holiday is celebrated throughout the Asian diaspora, from Vietnam (Tet), to North and South Korea (Seollal) and Tibet (Losar). Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia also celebrate this holiday.

Saturday, 10 February and Sunday, 11 February 2024 will see one of the UK’s ‘brightest’ and most colourful event as we welcome in the Year of the Dragon and celebrate Chinese New Year in Manchester. Bright red lanterns hang resplendently from trees across the city centre as the streets host live performances, stalls and funfair, plus the return of the city’s the legendary Dragon Parade.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with Manchester’s legendary Dragon Parade. Follow the famous 175ft dragon through the city’s streets as it makes it way from Oxford Street to Chinatown, accompanied by a parade featuring traditional Lion and Ribbon dances, Chinese Opera performers, 12 Zodiac animals and ancient army characters.

Chinese New Year in Manchester - Chinese Brush Painting at GRUB

Join GRUB for a gentle introduction to Chinese painting using traditional and authentic Chinese art materials such as bamboo brushes, mineral paints and Chinese ink. Each session will teach you a different style which will help you build up to your final piece which will be painted onto a Rice paper board or Rice paper fan.

Chinese New Year in Manchester - Lion Dance

Celebrate Chinese New Year at The Portico Library, with traditional Lion Dances and February half term activities. Master Tang’s Lion Dance is coming to The Portico Library for traditional Chinese song and dance to mark the Lunar New Year of the Dragon. Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with cocktails featuring Southeast Asian flavours. Tarsier Southeast Asian Spirit will be taking over Hudson Social Bar from Wednesday 7th of February with a limited dragon themed menu travelling and exploring through the different parts of East and Southeast Asia.
