Who doesn’t love a traditional afternoon tea? Particularly if you can tuck into your scones, cakes and cuppa with a canalside view as spectacular as this one over at Grandpa Greene’s in Diggle, Oldham.
The popular indoor and outdoor cafe and ice cream parlour could not be more happily situated – nestled amid the rolling hills of Saddleworth and sitting right next to the Huddersfield Canal.
And, from Saturday 2nd October, the venue is launching its ever-popular afternoon tea selection available to order from the main cafe – all served up on a cute mini picnic bench.
The mouthwatering selection includes four hefty open sandwiches per person – served up on artisan sourdough with a generous wedge of fillings – tuna mayo, spicy chicken, egg mayonnaise and a cheese and chutney.
Meanwhile the sweet treats are just as generous – a huge, fresh-baked fruit scone served with jam and clotted cream, a triangle of chocolate brownie and hefty slice of Victoria sponge cake. Completing the impressive dessert selection is a mini milkshake served in a cute milk bottle with straw.
The afternoon tea, served with unlimited Yorkshire tea, is priced at £19.50 per person, or add a glass of prosecco for £3.95. It’s also available in vegetarian and vegan options, while a smaller child’s version can be ordered. The afternoon teas have been particularly popular over recent months as a takeaway option seven days a week – while deliveries are made to the local area on the weekends.

The cafe itself boasts three glass fronted terraces as well as a main cafe bar recently refurbished with fabulous mint greens and trailing wisteria. On sunny days you can also sit on one of the range of picnic benches outside too.
But be warned, when you order one of these adorable looking picnic bench afternoon teas you will be the envy of pretty much everyone walking past who stops to have a gawp.
Having sampled it all, they have good reason to!
If afternoon tea isn’t quite your thing, then Grandpa Greene’s also offers a full brunch and lunch menu daily, and of course then there’s the ice cream.
The venue has become famous for its range of award-winning ice creams, handmade to a recipe from the original Grandpa Greene who made the sweet treat at his Salford corner shop in the 1920s.
Afternoon tea is available seven days a week, but must be pre-booked, at Grandpa Greene’s, Canal Side, Ward Lane, Diggle, Oldham, OL3 5JT.
