Review: An Inspector Calls at LOWRY is a ‘tour de force of performance and set design’

An Inspector Calls at LOWRY is a theatrical triumph, combining stellar performances, a jaw-dropping set, and J.B. Priestley’s razor-sharp writing to deliver a gripping, unforgettable night of mystery and social commentary.

If you think a family dinner can’t go from delightful to disastrous in a heartbeat, then you haven’t met the Birlings. An Inspector Calls takes their seemingly perfect evening and flips it on its head when the mysterious Inspector Goole crashes the party.

What follows is a rollercoaster of revelations and regrets, served with a side of suspense.

An Inspector Calls at LOWRY

Let’s talk about that set. Ian MacNeil’s design is jaw-dropping, almost a character on its own.

The house is like a dollhouse from your most twisted dreams—small yet grand, perched like it’s teetering on the brink of something dark. When it cracks open to reveal the full room, it’s like peeking into the very soul of the Birlings, and trust me, it’s not pretty. The rain and mist outside? Genius. It chills you to the bone and perfectly mirrors the storm brewing inside.

Standout Performances

Pena liyambo as Sheila Birling? She’s got you hooked from the get-go. Watching her go from a bubbly, sheltered young woman to someone grappling with the harsh truths about her family is a ride you won’t want to miss. Her transformation feels real, raw and riveting.

Then there’s Jackie Morrison as Mrs. Birling. Oh, she’s a piece of work! Morrison nails the role of the self-righteous matriarch who’s blind to her flaws but quick to judge everyone else. You’ll love to hate her.

Priestley’s Perfect Puzzle

J.B. Priestley’s writing is the glue that holds this gripping tale together. It’s clever, cohesive, and full of biting wit. The story unfolds with precision, each twist pulling you deeper into the mystery. You think you know where it’s going, but trust me, you don’t.

This production of An Inspector Calls is a theatrical triumph. The performances are stellar, the set is stunning, and the story will stick with you. If you love a good whodunit with a side of social commentary, this one’s for you. Grab a ticket, sit back, and prepare to be spellbound.
