There’s no forgetting ‘leg day’ for us Mancs this summer, as training begins for the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride in aid of The Christie hospital.
On Sunday 5th July, a huge crowd of cyclists will set off on the journey to Blackpool, through the luscious country lanes of Lancashire, pedalling to raise money for the hospital.
The route will begin at the MediaCity Piazza, and finish at Blackpool Promenade, with local supporters cheering you on all the way.
The event attracts more than 4,000 cyclists each year, with the money raised providing support for The Christie charity. The organisation is one of the largest hospital charities in the UK with 81p in every pound raised going directly to the patients.
Inspiring hope in patients and parents, carrying out revolutionary research, and offering the best treatment they can provide – there is really no end to what this charity does to help its patients. And now you can help them too, simply by hopping on your bike.
Although it may seem a long way, there will be plenty of refreshment stops along the way, as well cycle mechanics, marshals and pick-up vehicles to help you out may you need it.
At the end of the 60 mile stretch, which is an estimated 15 hour walk, finishers will be greeted with a barbecue, live music and a delightful massage – you’ve earned it. Oh, and lets not forget the beer tent…
To take part, all you need to do is go to the website (link at the bottom) and register as a member for £22. Or, you can even register a team and raise the money all together.
Each member will receive a welcome pack to get them started on their journey, a special Christie team t-shirt, fund-raising support and advice (to show you how to raise the money).
Although membership fees go towards the safe running of the event, 100% of the sponsorship money goes towards The Christie charity and their fight against cancer.
Any member who manages to raise £200 before Sunday 28th June will get a limited edition Team Christie jersey. So get your sponsor list full up, not just for those in need of The Christie’s help, but for the really cool jumper, too.
And if, during your training, you fancy pushing yourself even further, the 100 mile (or 100km if you prefer) bike ride on Sunday 13th September is a beautiful route through the hills of Cheshire, which has also been arranged to help raise money for The Christie.
Starting and finishing at Wythenshawe Park in Manchester, the track heads first to Northwich, stops in the cosy town of Nantwich for a well-deserved lunch break, before heading back through Middlewich to the finish line.
The more miles you do, the more money you raise.
So get your tires on the road and start training. Tiring as it may seem, we’re sure you’ll have a wheelie good time.
The 60-mile Manchester to Blackpool bike ride takes place on Sunday 5th July, from 7.30am, starting from The Piazza, MediaCityUK, Salford, M50 2EQ. Entry from £22.
