In a world where so much comes with a price tag, there’s a little gem tucked away in Stanley Square, Sale, that offers something truly priceless — the joy of reading, completely free.
Step through the doors of GET Free Books, and you’re met with more than just shelves brimming with books — you’re greeted by smiling volunteers, friendly chats, and a sense of warmth that makes you feel instantly at home.
Whether you’re a lifelong reader, someone looking to fall back in love with books, or a parent searching for magical bedtime stories, this is a place where everyone is welcome.
GET Free Books
GET Free Books, part of the Global Educational Trust, is a unique charity bookshop that offers visitors up to three free books per visit — with no catch, no cost, and no questions asked.
“It’s really that simple,” said Mandy Hill, who has been volunteering at the shop for the past seven years and now manages the Sale branch. “Anyone can come in and take three books home with them. If they want to bring books back or donate others, that’s wonderful, but there’s never any obligation.”
A book haven for all ages

Step inside the shop and you’ll find shelves upon shelves of second-hand books in every genre imaginable — from best-selling thrillers to children’s classics, history, cookbooks, travel guides, and even niche finds like lace-making manuals or zombie apocalypse survival guides.
“There’s something for everyone,” Mandy said. “We have a special kids’ corner with a little table and sofa where children can color and explore books — it’s a great way to encourage young readers.”
For parents, avid readers, and even curious passers-by, GET Free Books is a treasure trove for book lovers. It’s also become a vital community hub, a welcoming space where people drop in for a chat, share recommendations, and connect.
A community built on kindness

What makes this bookshop truly special is that it’s entirely run by volunteers — people who love books, love their community, and want to make a difference.
“We get volunteers from all walks of life,” explained Mandy. “Some are teenagers doing community service for their A-levels, others are retirees who enjoy having a purpose and meeting people. Many of us started as customers who just wanted to help out.”
All of the books are generously donated by local residents, and all shelving and furniture have also come from the community. “It’s a real circular economy, and everyone chips in to make it work,” Mandy added.
No barriers to reading — just open doors
At a time when the cost of living is rising and many people are cutting back on extras like books, GET Free Books makes reading accessible to all — without the worry of due dates or fees.
“There’s no financial barrier here,” said Mandy. “And unlike libraries, people don’t have to worry about returning the books on time — if at all. If they love the book, they can keep it. If not, they can bring it back. It’s a stress-free way to enjoy reading.”
The shop’s ethos is simple: Books should be for everyone. And with nearly one billion people globally still unable to read or write, the mission of the Global Educational Trust — to distribute free books and promote literacy — is as vital as ever.
An invitation to all
So, whether you’re an avid bookworm, a parent encouraging your child to read, or someone who just fancies a friendly chat, GET Free Books in Sale is a little haven waiting for you.
And if you’ve got a few spare books at home, or a bit of time to volunteer, the door is always open.
“We’re a really friendly bunch,” Mandy says. “People can pop in to browse or just talk — we love meeting new faces. And if anyone wants help picking a book, we’re always happy to make recommendations!”
So next time you’re in Sale, hop off the tram and wander into Stanley Square — you might just leave with your next favourite book
