Amid the twinkling lights and festive cheer, a story of resilience shines brighter this Christmas in Trafford, where the Little Green Sock Project is delivering joy to families in need while facing the fight of its life.
This December, the Little Green Sock Project has brought festive magic to over 250 children across Trafford, distributing more than £17,000 worth of toys, pyjamas, jumpers, and gifts.

For families struggling with the mounting pressures of the cost-of-living crisis, these parcels of joy are a reminder that kindness and community can overcome even the darkest days.
“Seeing parents’ faces light up with relief and children filled with excitement is why we do what we do,” said Catherine D’Albertanson, founder of the Little Green Sock Project.
“But as we celebrate, we’re also racing against time to save the future of our charity.”
Located in Stretford Mall, the baby bank has become a vital support hub for families across Greater Manchester, providing essentials like clothing, nappies, and prams since its launch in 2022.
But now, its future hangs in the balance. With the mall set for demolition in 2025, the charity must raise £200,000 by January to secure a new home—a daunting challenge as the clock ticks down.
Their “Save Our Baby Bank” campaign has raised £33,700, a vital lifeline but still far from their target. However, the charity received a significant boost when the AJ Bell Futures Foundation donated £20,000 towards the cause.
An incredible community effort
“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of our community this Christmas,” Catherine said.
“This incredible donation from AJ Bell is a game-changer, but it’s just the beginning.
“Without a new home, we won’t be able to continue helping the families who rely on us most.”
Elizabeth Carrington, trustee of the AJ Bell Futures Foundation, expressed pride in supporting the initiative: “The Little Green Sock Project is a beacon of hope for families in Trafford.
“By supporting their vital work, we hope to ensure no child in our community goes without.”
Catherine D’Albertanson’s story
For Catherine, the charity’s mission is deeply personal. Reflecting on her childhood, she recalled the struggles of growing up in an environment marred by domestic abuse, where the lack of material provisions often forced her family back into unsafe situations.
“When I started Little Green Sock, I thought about how having basic essentials could have changed my family’s life,” she said.
“It might have meant we didn’t have to go back. Now, we’re making sure other families don’t face the same impossible choices.”
Since its inception, the Little Green Sock Project has provided critical support to over 1,300 children, redistributing 17 tonnes of donated clothing and baby items.
Its 300 volunteers have dedicated over 7,000 hours to the cause, from organising collections to sewing and sorting.
“Every bundle we deliver isn’t just items; it’s hope,” Catherine explained. “A pram is a lifeline for a parent with two young children. A warm coat can turn a freezing winter into a time for outdoor adventures. We’ve shown what’s possible when a community comes together.”
Child Poverty in Trafford
While Trafford is known as one of Greater Manchester’s wealthiest boroughs, the reality is starkly different for many families. Over 11,000 children in Trafford live in poverty, with areas in North and West Trafford facing deprivation levels comparable to inner-city Manchester.
“Child poverty doesn’t just exist—it thrives in the shadows,” Catherine said.
“We’re here to shine a light and provide dignity to families who feel left behind.”
Despite the overwhelming support, Little Green Sock still needs to raise £165,000 to secure its future. The charity is calling on local businesses, community groups, and philanthropists to join their mission.
“We’re not just asking for help; we’re offering a partnership to create real, lasting change in our community,” Catherine said. “Every pound, every connection, and every bit of support takes us closer to saving our Baby Bank.”
