Expect the unexpected with Liam High’s latest comedy-drama, Some Masterchef Sh*t, now playing at 53two in Manchester.

This thoroughly entertaining play, a deserving winner of The Off-Cut Festival 2024, masterfully collides two unlikely worlds through the simple act of “wanting to do something nice for someone.”

Some Masterchef Sh*t

Eschewing content warnings, Some Masterchef Sht* dives headfirst into themes that might typically warrant them, encouraging the audience to experience its surprises and absurdities without preconceived notions.

This deliberate choice amplifies the play’s impact, making its unexpected twists and turns even more delightful.

The story begins with an awkward first meeting in a café between socially anxious Luke (George Miller) and confident GP Adam (Callum Joshua Sim).

Their initial interaction, filled with polite conversation and stilted jokes, is a relatable depiction of strangers attempting to connect.

As the characters begin to share their experiences through lenses of queerness, class, education, sexuality, and veganism, the narrative takes intriguing and unexpected directions.

Clever dialogue

High’s clever dialogue and well-crafted story arc keep the audience guessing.

Just when you think you know where the story is heading, it takes another surprising turn, blending absurdity with relatable down-to-earth moments.

This balance is key to the play’s charm, ensuring the audience remains firmly connected to the complex characters portrayed superbly by Miller and Sim.

Directed by James Cave, the production utilises naturalistic, adaptable set pieces to effectively frame its three main locations.

The result is a polished and well-rounded production that showcases the talents of everyone involved.

Impressive performances from Miller and Sims

Miller and Sim’s performances are standout, their chemistry and comedic timing driving the play’s success.

They are opposites drawn together by mysterious forces that make an intriguing narrative.

Their characters’ deep disclosures, wrapped in dark humour but incredible honesty, demand attention and elicit plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

The conversational elements are sharp, engaging, and thought-provoking, addressing themes of consent, friendship, love, and men’s mental health.

High’s writing shines in this dark comedy, which never quite settles into predictability.

The play is frustrating in a good way, teasing the audience with near-resolutions before veering off into new territory. This dynamic keeps viewers engaged from start to finish.

The ending is as random as the start. The play doesn’t ever veer from being entertaining, original and well worth your time.

In Some Masterchef Sht*, High has created a play that is both exciting and original, filled with clever humour and poignant messages.

This world premiere at 53two is a must-see, offering a refreshing and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
