We spoke to James and Tom about the upcoming New Animals Collective event, and why you should check it out.

So just what is the New Animals Collective? Tom elaborated.

“As a group of working-class people, creatives and NHS workers, we noticed so many of our cultural spaces were under threat.

“The Niamos Centre, our venue, has huge cultural significance to Manchester, so we wanted to share our love for music and Art there whilst helping keep it alive.

“Art is not a luxury, it is essential to a happy life, and we need events that celebrate art and creativity that are accessible to everyone.

“This is part of the reason we have free entry for the first few hours of our event, so no matter how much money you have, you can access art and a great event.

“We’re here to make sure Manchester’s creativity doesn’t die”

“Manchester has always had a creative community, but we can’t rest on our laurels, the Madchester scene was a huge part of why Manchester is revered globally, but whilst we honour that, we’re here to make sure our creativity doesn’t die.”

What’s on this year?

The first event was a huge success, drawing people from Manchester and beyond for its eclectic mix of creatives, from music, art and performance.

James said: “We were humbled by the success of the first event. It far exceeded what we expected, and made us realise that we have captured something truly special.

“The Niamos has been home to many historic Mancunian moments, and anyone who’s been there knows just how important it is to our city.

“We had blistering performances from rapper BatFunk, and spoken word artist T.Mo and danced into the evening, all whilst taking in some of the best Art and Photography Manchester has to offer.

“This time around we’ve hired much more of the Niamos Centre out, meaning we have more room to display art and photography, we’ll have a “living canvas”, which means people attending will be able to paint one of our models.

“We’ve also hired the Big Tone soundsystem, and will have a full lineup of DJs and rappers, including Donnie Danko, BatFunk, Amen Sage and more.

“Our resident chefs are back too, with a variety of great snacks and drinks (vegan and vegetarian options available) alongside two fully stocked bars.”

Why is this event important?

The Niamos Centre

The event is all about community, and by supporting the Niamos Centre, the funds raised will allow the centre to grow and support local artists.

The building has a storied history, with the legendary Nina Simone performing there in 1991.

The building was turned over in 1956 to the BBC who launched Soundstage North from the venue.

Incredibly, this is where The Beatle’s first live radio performance was broadcast.

The venue is still, by its own admission, trying to find its feet following Covid and the Cost of Living Crisis.

Venues like this are vital for creatives of all types to cut their teeth, and the more creative spaces in the city, the more opportunities are afforded to all who want to express their work.

Who will be performing at this year’s event?

Performing at this year’s event will be DJ’s, Spoken word artists and rappers, including DJ Jumbled, DJ Krioso, The Thirsty Poet, Donnie Danko, BatFunk and Amen Sage.

More are expected to be announced soon.

When does the event take place?

The event takes place on Saturday 13th July from 2 pm -11 pm.

Entry is free from 2 pm to 5 pm, and £5 afterwards till close.
