Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2, a key component of the £1.3bn Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, has received international acclaim as one of the most beautiful airports globally.
The prestigious Prix Versailles, an esteemed award in the realm of design and architecture recognized by UNESCO, commended the terminal’s innovative and inspiring design.
Judges Laud “Perfectly Mastered Interior Design”
The Prix Versailles, launched in 2015, evaluates criteria such as innovation, creativity, reflection on local heritage, and ecological efficiency.
And the newly updated Terminal 2, designed by renowned architects Pascall+Watson, opened in 2021 and was judged as part of the 2022 cohort for the Prix Versailles.
Judges specifically praised the terminal’s “perfectly mastered interior design,” highlighting its blend of lightness and conviviality.
Transformation Milestone: 1 Million Hours of Work
The recognition coincides with a significant milestone in the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, with over 1 million hours of work dedicated to the project since its announcement in 2015.
The transformed Terminal 2, open since 2021, has garnered acclaim for its modern facilities, locally sourced dining options, and renowned retail outlets.
Expansion Plans and Economic Impact
The next phase of the transformation aims to nearly double Terminal 2’s current capacity by 2025, making it the primary hub for around 80% of the airport’s passengers.
The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme, spearheaded by Manchester Airports Group (MAG), is expected to create over 500 jobs in construction alone, with an additional 16,400 jobs generated by 2040.
Global Recognition Among Top Airports
Terminal 2 joins the ranks of six airports recognised by the Prix Versailles in 2022, including Los Angeles International Airport’s West Gates Terminal, Helsinki Airport’s Terminal 2, and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport in China.
