Lucy & Yak, Manchester

Founded in 2017 by Lucy Greenwood and Chris Renwick, the brand has become synonymous with sustainable fashion, ethical production, and a distinctive sense of style.

Located within the beating heart of the city’s creative industries in the Northern Quarter, Lucy & Yak’s infamously pink-painted store will open on High Street on the vacant site of the old Oklahoma gift shop.

Fair Trade fashion

At the heart of Lucy and Yak’s ethos lies a deep commitment to ethical production practices.

The brand ensures fair wages and safe working conditions for its workers, forging strong relationships with suppliers to create a positive impact on the lives of people involved in the production process.

They claim that by championing fair trade, Lucy and Yak set a benchmark for responsible fashion that considers the human aspect ‘as crucial as the final product.’

Lucy Greenwood, co-founder of Lucy & Yak, said: “We are so excited to be coming to Manchester next month, and can’t wait to be a part of the city’s vibrant culture and art scene.

“The new store will be another hub for creativity and a touch point to engage in person. As Northerners ourselves, We’re very excited to have the opportunity to reach even more of our community in the North and continue building our Re:Yak in-store clothing buyback scheme, and upcycling and repair workshops.”

Eco-friendly clothing

Lucy and Yak’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its use of eco-friendly materials.

“By incorporating organic cotton, recycled polyester, and other sustainable fabrics, the brand reduces its environmental footprint. This choice reduces the reliance on harmful chemicals, minimises water consumption, and promotes a healthier ecosystem. Embracing eco-consciousness, Lucy and Yak showcase how fashion can be both stylish and sustainable, encouraging consumers to make environmentally responsible choices without compromising on personal style.

Inclusive Sizing and Gender-Neutral Designs

Lucy and Yak firmly believe that fashion should be inclusive and accessible to all. To that end, they offer an extensive range of sizes, ensuring that people of diverse body types can find garments that fit comfortably and make them feel confident. The brand also embraces gender-neutral designs, acknowledging and celebrating the fluidity of style. By fostering inclusivity, Lucy and Yak promotes a positive body image and challenge traditional fashion norms.

This launch follows the successful opening of the brand’s newest stores in Bristol, Norwich, Cambridge and Nottingham which have already proven just as popular with the Yak community as the beloved flagship store in Brighton, located on the bustling North Laine.

The Iconic Dungarees and Playful Aesthetic

You can’t talk about Lucy and Yak without mentioning their signature dungarees. These versatile and comfortable overalls have become a staple of the brand. With an array of bold colours, patterns, and prints, Lucy and Yak garments exude a playful aesthetic that resonates with the fashion-forward and eco-conscious individual.

These six new bricks and mortar stores are part of Lucy & Yak’s ambitions to have a greater physical presence across the UK, and more opportunities for face-to-face interactions with the Yak community.

More locations are already planned for the remainder of 2023, with the aim that each shop can also act as a Re:Yak Hub to push their circularity initiatives as they will act as – a space for customers to recycle, repair or upcycle their clothes.
