The only contestant from Manchester on the new series of The Apprentice has been fired in the first episode.
Sarah Byrne was brought back to the boadroom by project leader Jasmine after the girls lost the first task.
This year’s batch of young entrepreneurs had been sent to Malta with a shopping list of items to buy as cheaply as they could. But this wasn’t as straightforward as a pint of milk, a tin of beans and a Warburton’s toastie. Some of the items on the list were rather obscure – like an octopus with a 40ft hose.
It was, as you might expect, a complete shambles. The boys were slightly less awful than the girls and won the task, despite bringing back a dead octopus instead of an ‘octopus’ breathing apparatus for divers.
Sarah came across as being a bit pushy and, quite frankly, a bit gobby – something she would no doubt admit to.
In the boardroom, she was up against posh Jasmine and Jackie, a cool, calculating American. After a brief struggle, Sarah had the honour of becoming the first person on the new series to thank Lord Sugar for the opportunity.
She did rather better on You’re Fired where the audience voted to hire her. Unfortunately for Sarah, the only person who does the hiring and firing on The Apprentice is Lord Sugar.
But fear not, Sarah fans. We have a funny feeling this won’t be the last we’ll be seeing of her. Celebrity Big Brother perhaps?
By the way, just in case you’re from Mars and have never seen The Apprentice, it’s a series in which 16 young entrepreneurs with over-inflated egos and lips compete to find out who is the least useless and blag a £250k investment from Lord Sugar. Only one, in the immortal words of Lord Sugar, can win.
As for a Mancunian winning The Apprentice? There’s always next year.
