New modern Polish restaurant Platzki opens at Great Northern

There’s no shortage of Polish shops in Manchester where you can go to buy decent bread, dumplings, and kefir that’s a fraction of the price of the stuff they sell in supermarkets.

But when it comes to Polish cafes and restaurants we’re not exactly spoilt for choice.

Popular city centre restaurant Platzki, which recently moved from The Kitchens in Spinningfields to the old B.Eat Street unit in Great Northern, proves there’s more to Polish cuisine than sauerkraut and soup.

They specialise in platzki – pancakes made from grated or ground potato, flour and egg – with fillings inspired by a variety of different countries’ favourite foods.

Traditional Polish platzki are sprinkled with sugar. Swedish platzki are filled with salmon, creme fraiche, capers and dill. Greek platzki are filled with yoghurt, melon, pomegranate and honey. English platzki are filled with baked beans, sausage and mushrooms. You get the picture.

You can even get them with beer battered fish, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce.

There is always a vegetarian soup option packed full of fresh vegetables, and vegan friendly dishes like galabki z grzybami i kasha – barley groats with wild mushrooms wrapped in savoy cabbage with a creamy tomato sauce baked in the oven.

Don’t worry if you can’t pronounce it. They’re also known as ‘not real pigeons’ because their shape resembles the sleeping birds.

There are plenty of other dishes on the menu including the obligatory boiled or fried dumplings with a variety of fillings.

The menu changes every week which makes it the perfect place to re-visit and there’s a special weekend menu.

With prices as low as £4 for soup and only £7 for a healthy beetroot and salmon salad, the food is affordable as well as delicious.

And with breakfast being arguably everyone’s favourite meal of the day, try Platzki’s brunch menu if you’ve had enough of avocado on toast.

Once a month, Platzki hosts a variety of open events and live music with free food to sample and low prices on a selection of Polish alcohol.

Platzki is open from 12pm every Wednesday to Sunday. Closing times are Wednesday 6pm, Thursday 7pm, Friday and Saturday 10pm and 7pm on a Sunday.
