A skyscraper touted to ‘push the boundaries of city centre living’ has moved a step closer to becoming reality — but plans next door appear to be dead in the water.
Proposals to build a 44-storey apartment block with 364 flats on Whitworth Street West have been submitted for planning permission. Some 120 will be one-bedroom, 218 will have two bedrooms and 26 will be three-beds.
Whitworth Street West
Developers Glenbrook say arches on street level will house residents’ communal amenity facilities, in an effort to ‘push the boundaries of city centre living’.
“We have used our extensive experience of delivering high-quality residential developments and feedback from our operational partners to ensure Whitworth Street West truly responds to the requirements of residents, both now and in the future,” Daniel Roberts, Glenbrook development director, told property news title Place North West.
“We believe this development and its exceptional location offer the opportunity to push the boundaries of city-centre living, and we’re hugely excited about the prospect of bringing such a prestigious building to market.”
While the 2-4 Whitworth Street West project has moved a step forward in formally being entered for planning permission, a neighbouring tower looks dead in the water. Proposals to build one of Manchester’s first ‘skinnyscrapers’, Vision Manchester, hit trouble last year.
Vision Manchester Ltd
Companies House documents show its developer, a special-purpose vehicle called Vision Manchester Ltd, entered administration last June.
The land has been sold to a new developer called Atri7 6 Limited Ltd, which ‘intends to explore an alternative proposal for the site’ according to a new application to Manchester city council to ‘discharge’ the landowners of an obligation to submit building proposals by November 2024, before construction starts.
“The deadline referenced in the first part of the condition has not been satisfied,” the application said.
“The previous site owner entered receivership earlier in 2024 and the applicant subsequently purchased the site.”
In effect, it means building work cannot begin at 10-12 Whitworth Street West. Combined with the new developer’s plans ‘to explore an alternative proposal for the site’, it appears the plans for the 37-storey Vision Manchester will not come to fruition.
