The Roebuck pub in Alkrington is set to reopen its doors this weekend following a dazzling million-pound makeover.

This beloved community hub, formerly known as Thornberries, is stepping into a new era, proudly bearing its original name once more.

The Roebuck’s rejuvenation comes courtesy of Manchester’s esteemed brewery, Joseph Holt, which acquired the pub last October.

In a heartwarming gesture of community spirit, the new owners invited locals to decide the pub’s name.

The response was overwhelmingly in favour of reverting to The Roebuck, a name steeped in local history and sentiment.

The renovation has introduced a stylish wraparound bar, an inviting beer garden, and a spacious private function room.

It’s not just about aesthetics, though. The pub will now offer live TV sporting events and an extended menu, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

“Thornberries was always the people’s pub – a true cornerstone of the community,” says Mark Norbury, Joseph Holt’s Pub Director.

“It’s no surprise that The Roebuck was the clear winner of our naming competition.

“This is a new beginning for the pub, welcoming everyone to enjoy classic Joseph Holt hospitality, enhanced by a significant refurbishment that breathes new life into the place.”

175-years of history with Joseph Holt

Joseph Holt, a brewery with a rich 175-year history, owns 127 pubs across the North West.

Thornberries was a strategic acquisition to fill a geographical gap in their estate, as the brewery did not previously own any pubs in Alkrington Green.

“Location is crucial for us,” Mark explains.

“We strive to be at the heart of the communities we serve. Thornberries was an obvious purchase because of its community significance, but it was clear it needed a complete overhaul.”

The Roebuck’s transformation is more than skin deep.

As a family-run business for six generations, Joseph Holt values heritage and tradition while meeting modern customer needs. This respect for the past and commitment to the future is evident in every corner of The Roebuck.

“Thornberries, like many of our pubs, has been a venue for charity events, social groups, and community gatherings,” Mark continues.

“These activities, which highlight our pubs as central to local life, will continue under its new name. At its core, The Roebuck will serve award-winning ales and delicious food as it embarks on this exciting new chapter.”

So, as the doors of The Roebuck swing open once more, the pub stands ready to welcome old friends and new faces alike, continuing its legacy as a cherished community gem with a fresh new sparkle.
