A NEW exhibition celebrating the best of George Best, both on and off the pitch, was opened at the Manchester United Museum this week, by Manchester United legends and two of George’s former teammates, Pat Crerand and David Sadler.

The George Best exhibition, simply called ‘George Best – ICON’ – opened to the public today and replaces the current David Beckham exhibit at the club’s Museum at the Old Trafford stadium, which is offering free entry for all throughout June.

Music was provided by Manchester band Electric Stars, who recently released a song for charity named ‘Belfast Boy’ in celebration of George’s birthday, with all proceeds being split between the MU Foundation and George Best Foundation.

Global fashion entrepreneur Harold Tillman, who recruited George Best for fashion’s first footballer-endorsement deal back in the 1960s, joined in the celebrations.

The special exhibition includes objects like the signed match ball from the legendary Northampton Town game during which George scored six goals, and a letter from Sir Matt Busby to George’s parents written in 1962 while George was still playing for United as an amateur.

Also on display is a host of other items including a George Best match-worn shirt, various pieces of clothing and products he endorsed while he was at the peak of his career, as well as a number of items from the George Best fan club.

The exhibition, which has been produced in partnership with Best Chances Charity, celebrates George’s career and life on the pitch and in the public eye and illustrate how the young Irish teenager rose to become the first global pin-up of British football.

With the free admission and extended opening hours at the Manchester United Museum until the end of June, now is the perfect time to visit ‘George Best – ICON’ at Old Trafford.
