Much like Manchester, this modest boutique hotel is unique. A hidden gem oozing individuality, Great John Street hosts 30 rooms located near Old Granada Studios. Also a stone’s throw away from Deansgate, you’re perfectly sat in the city centre but without the noise. Created in an original Old School House, GJS is a chic eclectic townhouse hotel with individually designed bedrooms and suites alongside stylish lounges and Oyster Bar.
Individualistic by nature; it doesn’t stop with the decor. Norbert, a wonderful character greeted us with such enthusiasm and warmth. Friendly and efficient, Norbert served us a teapot, toast & jams without hesitation – even Nutella accompanied by a little travel story.
The original features of the Victorian school house – cast iron radiators, stripped floorboards, enormous windows and fireplaces – have been preserved and are complemented by rich, deep-coloured fabrics, roll-top baths and large comfortable beds to create a luxurious retreat.
Our room was home from home. Humbling with enough eclectic mix of quirk and luxury perks to please any Manchester diva.
Toweringly high ceilings allow 26 of the 30 rooms in this hotel are duplex and massive windows span both floors. All are en suite with walk-in showers and giant tubs – some have his-and-hers roll-top baths.
Each room is unique but shares the same sense of decadent style with crushed velvet fabrics, ornaments and books scattered on the bookshelves, and enormous beds.

The extra-large free-standing bath tub in the bedroom facing the TV was a hit.
Delightful breakfast. Anything you could wish for is handsomely presented for you to help yourself whilst waiting for your cooked breakfast. The cooked breakfast is cooked to perfection including all you’d expect and all you request. Poached? No problem. No tomato, no bacon three eggs, three sausages; no probs.
The hotel’s past as a schoolhouse has been embraced as a theme throughout – there are pictures of former pupils on the wall, the staircases are still named the boys’ and the girls’ and you can wallow in a hot tub on the roof garden “Playground”.
The Old School House boasts stunning entertainment rooms and features Eclectic Roof Terrace (Manchester hotel only) available for exclusive use for your own tailor made event. Even an afternoon tea, G&T before heading out or night cap before retreating to your delightful room.
See you on the terrace!
