Life Is A Party. Or so we are told by new Manchester IT club, LIV, as we descend the stairs into the luxurious cavern of their brand new Peter Street Venue. The words burn white neon and certain; a phrase that is very true to all those lucky enough to name somewhere like here their local.
“…drinks are served by barmen wearing leather kilts…”
Taking the place of Mo Mohamud’s previous and recently closed private member’s hangout, the Circle Club, LIV hopes to take its place. Naturally therefore, LIV has taken care to reclaim the city’s definition of sumptuous. There’s a lot of leather, a lot of mirrors and a lot of white neon signage. While The Circle Club breathed of prohibition America, LIV is far more contemporary what with its plethora of coloured lights.
Though there are numerous cosy alcoves of leather seat, this is clearly a place to see and be seen, as tables are conveniently angled in ample view of each other, while the dance floor stretches between. If you’re here to dance, then you’d better not be shy.
The bar is three parts marble to two parts mirror, and drinks are served by barmen wearing leather kilts, the like of which probably hang in Kanye West’s wardrobe. Givenchy or not, the uniforms are testimony to the dramatic change Muhamed’s venues have undergone. From exposed brick and a cursive reminder that ‘Life is Beautiful’, to futuristic transvestism and more white neon than you can shake a Belvedere cocktail at, it’s hard to see how LIV could attract the same type as The Circle Club.
Nevertheless, the press of Manchester are quite literally drinking it up and this is definitely somewhere we could imagine Manchester’s high flyers coming again and again. Because after all, their life is a party.
