Nestled on a busy corner at a far end of the Northern Quarter, Shack Bar and Grill is another fine example of a Manchester business thriving in an area of the city where once dereliction and squalor prevailed – Piccadilly Basin – but which, in recent years, has established itself as an important piece of the fabric of the finely woven tapestry that is Manchester.
“We wanted to get into that Northern Quarter vibe but also offer something different,” says Sam, Shack’s general manager. “We felt this location really suited our ambitions as it’s a really up and coming area of the city.”
Housed in a former clothing warehouse, Shack’s interior is fashioned largely out of reclaimed wood and occupies an expansive space, complete with all the quirks of a Manhattan-style loft apartment that give off a great vintage vibe. The theme is unmistakably Americana but with a rustic edge.
So what’s on offer? Well, as the name suggests, this is a grill restaurant so the focus is on meat. The hanging kebabs are a sight to behold and, of course, there’s the signature burgers, of which The Blackpool Tower, The Monster and The Shack Burger are the most popular. They will leave you shuddering at their sheer size. Then there’s 50% of all food on Mondays and they also accept Taste Cards Sunday through to Thursday.
Space is plentiful here. There’s a nice outdoor seating area, perfect for those balmy summer nights. And there’s plenty of space indoors for groups of all sizes. Couples who want a bit of peace and quiet or larger groups who fancy a game of beer pong or two can all find their spot in Shack.
Which brings us nicely onto the alcohol. Think signature cocktails, (try the ‘Breakfast’ which comes with its own shot of Cheerios), craft bottled beers and a huge, centrally located bar staffed by an experienced team who ensure that punters get the same great service every time. There’s a very inclusive feel to Shack, too. A warm, welcoming feel which, together with the daily 4pm – 7pm happy hour, makes this place very popular with the after work crowd.
There’s lots going on at Shack, too, with a popular open mic night the first Wednesday of every month, and regular DJs on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays until 3am at the weekends. Sports fans are well looked after, too, with NFL and Premier League football screened on a multitude of projectors and private booths with their own TVs. Oh, and there’s free pool tables on Tuesdays.
Customer engagement is high on the agenda. Shack goes above and beyond the call of duty to reach out to customers, and they feature prominently on Facebook and Twitter with regular competitions and giveaways.
