Classic(!) promises a fun romp through classical literature and delivers tenfold in a fantastically funny show which sees classic literature books given a refreshing new theatrical twist.

Despite only an hour-long, the stellar cast manages to fit an insane amount of jokes, musical numbers and genres into a jampacked show that entertains from beginning to end.

Classic! offers a unique retelling of classic novels such as a sea shanty-laden musical rendition of Moby Dick, a comedic parody of Wuthering Heights and a film noir reimagining Oliver Twist and many more! Each actor and actress disappear and reappear in new roles at the drop of a hat or several! Part of the show’s charm is that the audience never knows what to expect, even if they know the novel is being parodied, as over 40 books are given a fresh coat of paint in this comedic reinvention.

The six-strong cast of actors in this play within a play, Zac (Louis Blair), Lauryn (Althea Burey), Anna (Amy Drake), Vicky (Amy Gavin) and Reuben (Robin Simpson) and joined on stage by Director Joyce Branagh who expertly fills in as Alun.

The play follows the cast members as they struggle to break the world record of classics covered in an hour. The remarkable ways they manage to do so make for a great watch that never gets tiring as the show’s unpredictability keeps the audience guessing. At the same time, the crazy costumes and inventive use of props and sound design only add to the fun! Every performer is a delight to watch on stage as they all work in unison to reinvent the stories of yesterday so that modern audiences can enjoy them.

The small cast leaves a big impression; all can shine and show their versatility with excellent performances.

With outstanding writing by Peter Kerry and Lindsay Williams and brilliant British humour in spades, Classic! lives up to its name and delivers a show as funny as it is informative and a fun night out for theatre fans, both old and new.

Classic! can be seen at Hope Mill Theatre until Saturday 18th of June and tickets can be booked here.
