Partington Sports Village is about to get a serious lick of paint.

Trafford Council have approved a huge new £18m upgrade package, bringing the village slap bang into the 21st century.

The ambitious plans include improving the BMX track and associated facilities, fully renovating Cross Lane Park changing rooms and building a path around the park to improve access and support walking and running in the area.

There will also be a two-storey extension, the reconfiguration of a multi-use games area (MUGA), additional car parking, external lighting, cycle shelters and a bin store at the Chapel Lane facility.

A design and access statement submitted on behalf of the council by architect company Ellis Williams says the project will improve the sports hall, pool, gym, and changing facilities along with creating a new extension to the front that will house a public cafe, fitness suite and additional studio/community spaces.

It goes on: “This extension will provide a new ‘shop-window’ to the sports village, creating a more welcoming frontage that will have a greater impact from the Chapel Lane site entrance and the new pedestrian access from Warburton Lane.

“The proposal looks to enhance the current leisure offer to encourage further participation, as well as at the same time help foster a greater sense of community.

“The design has been underpinned by the council’s ethos of driving sport and physical activity across Trafford, inspiring and encouraging everyone to lead a more active and healthier lifestyle.”

Levelling Up Fund

The project is one of more than 100 projects across the UK to receive a share of the £2.1bn from the Levelling Up Fund to create jobs and boost economic growth.

“It is Trafford council’s intention that this windfall will be used to significantly improve the health and leisure offer for residents in Partington and enable Partington Sports village to remain a leading facility and football hub in Trafford,” the statement said.

Cllr Cath Hynes, Trafford Council

“We’ve applied for levelling-up money to regenerate the sports village, we’ve consulted on the plans, now it’s time to get those plans submitted for approval and then get the leisure centre redeveloped,” said Cath Hynes, Trafford Council’s executive member for Leisure, Arts, Culture and Heritage

“These are exciting times. The new facilities will be brilliant for the whole community. We’re committed to improving the health and wellbeing of all our residents and there’s going to be something for everyone at the improved sports village.”

It’s anticipated that there will be a temporary full closure of Partington Sports Village to allow refurbishment work to take place.

Closure would take place from autumn this year to prepare for work being carried throughout 2025.

The full refurbishment of the leisure centre is estimated to take up to 15 months with it reopening in January 2026.
