All-day NQ breakfast favourite The Koffee Pot has seen queues down the street the past couple of weekends, thanks to its latest takeaway offering.
Birria is basically a Mexican hangover dish consisting of homemade fried corn tacos loaded with meat and oozing Oaxaca cheese (a Mexican cheese great for melting, similar to Monterey Jack), all dunked in a rich, spiced cooking liquor (consommé).
Essentially, tacos dunked in gravy.
Many of us not living in the city centre have looked on in envy as pictures of the Birria Brothers loaded tacos flood social media.
Until now.
Because now, you can get them delivered to your door in the form of a meal kit.
Like their other meal kits – including full Koffee Pot breakfast kit, pancakes and bacon, the vegan full fry-up, and the famous Mancmuffin – the new beef birria taco kits are now available for nationwide delivery.
We tried one to find out what you get – and how easy it is.
Priced at £25, plus £2.50 local delivery charge, the kits arrive on a Friday, just in time for the weekend.
You get a generous portion of eight-hour slow-cooked beef, eight corn tortilla, a pot of beef consommé made from the cooking juices, a pot of ‘Red Gold’ oil, a tub of Birria Brothers three-cheese mix, a pot of fresh jalapeno salsa, and a pot of fresh chopped onion and coriander, plus a fresh lime.
In terms of preparation, all the hard work has already been done for you, so it only needs a couple of steps to finish at home.
First, you need to heat the meat until piping hot – either by placing the sealed bag in boiling water for 15 mins, or by emptying the contents into a pan and heating through.
Meanwhile, you mix the ‘Red Gold’ oil with the beef consommé, heat it in a pan, then let it stand for five minutes so the oil sits on top.
You then half dip a taco in the ‘Red Gold’/beef consommé mix so it goes halfway up, and place it in a hot frying pan.
Cover the taco with cheese, add some meat along the middle, and add a sprinkling of onions, coriander and jalapeno salsa, then it’s time to fold the taco in half.
You cook the taco for about two minutes either side, until crispy, adding a bit more ‘Red Gold’ to the pan when you flip.
And that’s basically it. It’s worth having the oven on low to keep the tacos warm until they’re all done – or there are also instructions for serving ‘family style’, if you prefer.
The consommé can be poured into a bowl or cup for dipping – and sipping – as you go.
The end result is utterly addictive – crisp taco shell, soft braised meat, crunchy onions, fragrant coriander, heat from the jalapeno, and a hint of spice from the rich beefy consommé.
It’a a fun kit for £25, and easy to make at home, too.
You could even do it with a hangover. In fact, we can recommend it.
