Sapphic Showcase

25 August 2023 @ 19:00 - 22:00

Free

Join us for a night of talent from amazing LGBTQ+ women – including you! – and a great opportunity to socialise to kick off Manchester Pride

We’re bringing together some fantastic headliners to entertain you and are inviting YOU to perform in one our open mic night slots. We’re so excited to see all the amazing Sapphic talent Greater Manchester has to offer from poetry, to comedy, and music! After these amazing performances, stick around for some opportunities to socialise and meet some people before Manchester Pride.

One of our headliners is Betty Doyle – Betty is a poet from Merseyside. Her work has appeared in magazines and journals such as Agenda, Butcher’s Dog, Poetry Wales, and The North. Her debut poetry pamphlet, Girl Parts, was published by Verve Poetry Press in 2022, and was hailed as being ‘tender, fierce, full of joy and rage’ by Helen Mort. She teaches Poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she also completed her PhD on infertility poetics. Twitter: betty_poet

Another of our amazing headliners is Kate McCabe – Kate is an American comic who has been living and working in the UK for the last 17 years. She performs with two improv troupes: ComedySportz Manchester and Murder Inc. Improv. In 2022, she co-authored the play THE NAME OF THE DAME, a satire of the film noir genre, which will debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. When she is not working professionally as a comic, she also lends her voice to audio books and video games. You may have even been killed by her flamethrower-wielding baddie in Tom Clancy’s THE DIVISION 2

We also have a performance from Aisha Akram. Aisha (she/her) is a spoken word performer who writes poetry about LGBTQ+, feminism, empowerment, romance, activism and many other taboo issues. She’s been performing since 2021 and uses it as an outlet of self expression and aims to help other people feel less alone with her words.

Open mic slots are available for any LGBTQ women and non-binary people who wish to access a women centred event. Our event will be LGBTQ women centred but our audience is open to all. Anyone attending will be expected to follow our Safer Spaces Policy.

To put yourself forward for the open mic night, please email [email protected] with your name, pronouns, and a few lines describing your act. Please note you will have 5 mins maximum to perform, and your act will be expected to adhere to our Safer Spaces Policy.

This event is taking place at HOME Manchester, in their amazing Event Space on the second floor. There are three levels to the building, including the ground floor and these are all accessible via a lift. There are accessible toilets on all levels and Gender Neutral Toilets are located on the Ground Floor.
