Tribute to the acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Icíar Bollaín

The Instituto Cervantes Manchester pays tribute to the filmmaker, actress, and screenwriter Icíar Bollaín, one of the most important filmmakers in contemporary Spanish cinema. Icíar Bollaín’s cinematic journey is marked by curiosity and commitment, which have led her to capture some of the key debates and challenges of contemporary society in her films. In this tribute, three films by the filmmaker will be screened, showcasing different moments of her career.

On 13 September, her film Flores de otro mundo (1999) will be projected, for which she received the Best Film Award at the Critics’ Week of the Cannes Film Festival.

On 14 September, the film Te doy mis ojos (2003) will be shown, which received seven Goya Awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Sound. On this day, we will also enjoy the educational value of cinema. The Cervantes teacher, Ana Valbuena, will present the film in accessible Spanish, and after the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to practice their Spanish skills with a specially designed study package on the film’s themes.

On 15 September, we screen El olivo (2016), and for this occasion, we will have the presence of Icíar Bollaóín. After the screening, she will engage in a dialogue with Santiago Fouz, a professor from the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Durham, and with the attending audience.
