Celebrations kick off on Saturday 31st August with a Freedom Parade through the city centre followed by a concert at the iconic Victoria Warehouse, Old Trafford.
On 4th March 1964, the Grenadier Guards were granted the Freedom of the City of Manchester, allowing the Regiment to march through the city with ‘colours flying, drums beating and bayonets fixed’.
2024 marks the 60th anniversary of being granted this privilege and to mark the occasion, as well as recognise the Regiment’s close ties with Manchester, the Grenadier Guards will host an exciting, celebratory weekend for locals starting on Saturday 31st August.
The first of the celebrations will be the Freedom Parade, which will start at 10.30am from Manchester Central Library. The Regiment will march past the Cenotaph to Princess Street, onto Portland Street, Oxford Street and back to the front of the library where the Parade will be dismissed and march to Mount Street.
Following the Parade at 2.30pm, the Regimental Band of the Grenadier Guards will host a free, one-off concert at the city’s most iconic gig venue, Victoria Warehouse in Old Trafford.
Victoria Warehouse will then be transformed for the ultimate Family Fun Day on Sunday 1st September, welcoming families from across the city to enjoy a host of activities for free including The Greatest Showman Experience, circus acts, a silent disco, an inflatables park, exotic animals and more! The fun day, which promises to be the perfect end to the school summer holidays, will begin at 12 noon and finish at 5pm. The Grenadier Guards will also be in attendance, with guests being given the chance to get up ‘close and personal’ to one of the country’s major tourist attractions.
