Cantorial Song: A Jewish Vocal Tradition Through Time

9 May @ 19:30 - 20:30

From £17
Cantorial Song Manchester Jewish Museum

An evening of incredible vocal recital with Hannah Rachel and Klezmorim of Manchester. Experience the ancient tradition of cantorial song and its prominence in secular music spanning over 100 years.

Join Hannah Rachel as she explores the ancient tradition of cantillation – the art of vocalising the Torah – and its influences across jazz, popular and contemporary classical genres. Through engaging with both Ashkenazic and Sephardic modes, the cross-genre programme specifically explores the centrality of cantillation to experiences of processing grief throughout Jewish history.

Hannah will be joined by a small ensemble of instrumentalists from Klezmorim of Manchester, led by Dan Mawson, in new arrangements devised especially for this event.

Come and feel the influence of this Jewish tradition on artists including Amy Winehouse, George Gershwin and Maurice Ravel in our beautiful historic synagogue – a space of reflection and celebration. This event promises to excite and intrigue your ears.
