This Northern pub group might launch a crisp butty menu – here’s hoping

Quick, cheap and deeply satisfying, the crisp butty is a comfort food classic.

But while it’s something we love to indulge in at home, it’s not something you’d expect to see on a pub menu. Until now.

Beerhouses Pubs group, whose pubs include the beautiful Stalybridge Buffet Bar at Stalybridge train station, have announced a new crisp butty menu.

“May or may not happen,” they said on Twitter. “If we get enough likes we’ll do it.”

I know I've been threatening but I had a spare 10 minutes so I've finally knocked up a Crisp Butty menu.

The menu is divided into sections, including “crinkle cut classics”, “combo butties” and even a “special sharing platter” – plus, controversially, a section called “not crisp butties”.

We’re relieved to see the bread they’ve opted for is thick white – fancy breads such as sourdough have no place in a crisp butty – while the butter choice is “lashings of Lurpak”. Salted, we hope.

For the “crinkle cut classics” selection, the crisp of choice is “Seabrook crisps, obviously”, with a choice of flavours including plain, salt and vinegar, cheese and onion or Canadian ham.

The “not crisp butties” option might cause a bit of controversy, full of fluffy corn snacks, but includes some nostalgic favourites – pickled onion Monster Munch, Bacon Fries, Scampi Fries, salt and vinegar Squares or Wotsits.

Then there’s the “combo butties”, which feature their own special combinations.

A “Cheese and Bacon” option features Bacon Fries and Wotsits, while a “Surf and Turf” option includes both Bacon and Scampi Fries.

“Mighty Meaty” is stuffed with Canadian ham Seabrook crisps and Bacon Fries, while “Double Cheese & Onion” features Monster Munch, Wotsits and cheese and onion Seabrook crisps.

If you really want to push the boat out, there’s the special sharing platter – a “7 course tasting menu” as they put it.

This one really goes all out, with hot pork scratchings, poppadoms and dip, Monster Munch, Bacon Fries, Scampi Fries – and two bags of Seabrook crisps.

Finally, salty snacks are getting the recognition they deserve. Let’s hope it happens.
