This new NQ gin bar will offer 80 gins and a smokehouse menu with global influences

A new gin bar is coming to the Northern Quarter, and offering up to 80 gins as well as a new food menu with influences from all over the world.

Miss Jessie Heywood’s Remarkable Gin and Food Emporium will open next month on the first floor of the Abel Heywood pub on Turner Street, and will host events and tastings as well as copious amounts of gin.

The new gin palace is inspired by Jessie Heywood, the daughter of former Manchester Mayor Abel Heywood, who the pub and boutique hotel is named after.

“We have turned our former dining room into a fantastic new gin and food emporium – incorporating up to 80 gins alongside gin cocktails, gin flights, gin globes and events such as meet the makers and ‘how tos’ with guest bartenders,” says Abel Heywood deputy manager Liv Mutter.

“Our menu will be distinctly smokehouse inspired and has taken influences from across the globe inspired by the real Jessie Heywood’s globetrotting travels collecting botanicals for Manchester Museum.”

Jessie, who died in 1947, was a botanist and collector who travelled the world and resided in New Zealand, from where she regularly sent packages of specimens to the Manchester Museum.

The new menu will reflect her travels, using spices and ingredients from across the globe. The smokehouse style dishes will offer a selection of contemporary small plates, sharing platters and larger plates.

The ground floor pub and the hotel will operate as normal, serving its popular brunch and all-day British-inspired menu featuring classic dishes with a Manchester twist.

The gin emporium is a natural progression for the pub, which already offers a dedicated gin menu featuring a selection of international and UK gins as well as several from Manchester and the north such as Manchester Three Rivers.

Gins are served in a balloon glass with juniper berries and the recommended garnishes, from lime and ginger to grapefruit and raspberries.

The first floor has been transformed for the new gin venture – whilst maintaining the contemporary Victorian style popular with the venue’s customers.

Miss Jessie Heywood’s Remarkable Gin and Food Emporium will open on 8th March on the first floor of The Abel Heywood, Turner Street.
