Always wanted to eat junk food and feel good about it? Well now you can.
On Saturday, June 20th, around 300 members of the public will descend on the Northern Quarter to cook up a storm and eat entirely from food that would otherwise have gone to waste. The Real Junk Food Project sources food that would otherwise go to waste and uses it to cook healthy, tasty meals.
It’s all for a good cause- raising awareness of excessive food waste and food poverty. Nearly 10% of people in the U.K. are living in “deep poverty” and struggling to afford food, yet an estimated 15 million tonnes of food is wasted in Britain every year “from plough to plate”.
The event will be split into two. From 1pm till 8pm, there’ll be a mix of art, activities and games as well as the main event – the Disco Soup cooking party which will see north west chefs help members of the public make a huge range of delectable dishes from ingredients destined for the dump.
Guests will be asked to offer a pay-as-you-feel donation for the meal. This part of the event is free to enter and open to all.
From 8pm till 1am, three floors of the Wonder Inn on Shudehill will be transformed into an awesome party pad with a purpose, offering an evening of live bands, DJ’s, beers, cocktails, food and dancing. This is a separate event for over 18’s only and requires a ticket from eventbrite – discosoupmcr2015.eventbrite.co.uk
Up to 200 extra portions of food will be prepared during the festival and delivered to people sleeping rough in the city centre.
The whole event will use approximately half a tonne of food that would otherwise have gone to waste and will involve over 50 volunteers.
PS Don’t forget your Tupperware!
