Dogs Trust

This Christmas, Dogs Trust is bringing warmth, joy, and wagging tails to those most in need across the North West. As part of its Together Through Homelessness scheme, the charity is delivering over 2,600 festive parcels packed with cozy dog coats, playful toys, and tasty treats to dog owners experiencing homelessness.

Manchester-based charity Lifeshare is among the local services benefitting from Dogs Trust’s expanded holiday efforts.

Speaking about the impact of the initiative, Judy Vickers, Operations Manager at Lifeshare, shared: “The Christmas parcels bring so much joy to the dog owners we support. Watching their faces light up as they gift their pets something special is what the festive season is all about.”

Rise in homelessness in the North West

With a reported rise in homelessness and the ongoing housing crisis, Dogs Trust is stepping up like never before. This year, the organisation has increased its parcel deliveries by 30% compared to 2023, ensuring more dogs and their owners across the UK can share the magic of Christmas together.

But it’s not just about festive goodies. For over 30 years, the Together Through Homelessness initiative has provided vital support for dogs and their owners, offering free veterinary care and helping homelessness services across the country become more pet-friendly. Over the past year alone, the scheme has funded more than 1,600 vet treatments for dogs whose owners are homeless or at risk of becoming so.

The lifeline of a loyal companion

Dogs Trust celebrated their tenth anniversary this year

James Hickman, Head of Outreach Projects at Dogs Trust, emphasised the importance of their work:“For people experiencing homelessness, the bond with their dog is a lifeline. This year, with the rising cost of living and housing crisis, the need for our support is greater than ever. Thanks to our generous supporters, we can ensure over 2,600 dogs and their owners celebrate Christmas together.”

Local services like YMCA Together in Liverpool, New Start Homes in Southport, and Gateway Homeless Project in Burnley will also receive parcels, ensuring that communities across the region benefit from the initiative.

How Mancunians can help

As Dogs Trust expands its efforts, they’re calling on the public to help them go even further. Donations to the Together Through Homelessness program will provide essential supplies and veterinary care, ensuring dogs and their owners don’t face the festive season alone.
