The best thing about the New Year is that it allows for the sense of a fresh start. Maybe you didn’t accomplish as much as you wanted, or maybe you just had a crap year. Whatever it was, this year it’s time to put the past in the past and kick some ass!

Instead of your bog standard New Year’s resolutions, take a step back and really think about what it is that you do that has held you back. Here are a few ideas to get your mind churnin’.

1. Life is not one big show and tell.

We know it is hard to resist posting every single thing you do and every place you go on facebook, twitter and instagram but guess what… People don’t care! The world does not need to know your every move; leave some things to the imagination. Mystery is good.

2. Stop comparing yourself to others.

Everyone is different. Do your own thing in your own way, in your own time. So what if your bezzie just got a promotion got married and had kids in the same year! Follow your own path! We seem to forget that the pictures we see of others on instagram and facebook are simply highlights of their lives and not exactly a true reflection.

They aren’t the everyday; they aren’t the struggle; they aren’t the bad hair day. They are the edited, photoshopped and posed highlight reel of a momentary highlight of someone else’s life.

3. Stop worrying about what others think of you.

People will always judge. Usually because they’re jealous but the sooner you accept this, the sooner you can start doing what you really want. Forget about everyone else and start walking your own journey. Whether you want to be healthier, lose weight, start a dance class or your own business. 2015 is your year and no one else’s.

4. Stop waiting.

Some of us look at taking risks negatively and some of us look at them as opportunities. If you don’t go for it now when will you? Start now and go after your dreams, the sooner you try, the sooner you find out if it was the right decision. There is nothing worse than the feeling of regret.

5. Stop being a stranger.

Don’t be shy, keep in contact and good things will come. We’re all in this together, trying to make our own way in the world so why not help each other out? Give the world and the people in it the best you have and it will come back to you! Kindness is forever so stop hiding and get out there!

6. Stop feeling sorry for yourself.

For starters, no one likes a negative Nancy. Those who feel sorry for themselves tend to get in their own way of success. You’re not a victim so instead of constantly surrounding yourself with drama, start looking up and think about how you can change and improve your life!

7. Rid yourself of guilt.

There is a difference between making changes and quitting. It’s very rare for us to make the right decision the first time around. Don’t look back and feel guilty, we all make mistakes. Look at everyone of them as a lesson. We all know once you’ve touched a hot stove top, you’ll never do it again!

8. Stop saying “yes” all the time.

Don’t want to do something? Say ‘NO’. Don’t feel like you need to give an explanation. If you don’t want to go out, don’t want to have a drink, don’t want to help your friend move house on your first and only day off then just say ‘no’.

9. Stop trying to be like everyone else.

Be yourself and own it. So what if you have strange interests or you still like wearing that denim jacket you bought in 1998. Go for it! Live your life the way you want to and don’t be afraid to tell your story.

10. Don’t think you have to get it right the first or fifth time!

A perfect life is a boring life. We can never know 100% if a decision is the right one and why should we? There is no guidebook or perfect formula for life so we use the good ol’ process of elimination. This is part of the journey, part of life. What good are the ups if they’re not balanced by the downs?
