Yellow Peril Awareness Day

6 May @ 11:00 - 16:00

From £3

An annual exhibition exploring ESEA (East and Southeast Asian) history in the UK.

Voice ESEA are launching YPAD – Yellow Peril Awareness Day – an annual deep-dive into chapters of interwoven British-ESEA history on 6th May to commemorate the signing of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. This act of Yellow Peril – anti-ESEA sentiment – explicitly prohibited Chinese immigrants from entering the country by US law, and we’ll be delving into how this also had knock-on effects or was similar to the struggles our communities went through here.

But despite the odds, we have triumphed in many aspects. So join us at Bridge 5 Mill in Ancoats anytime between 11am and 4pm as we reflect back on our ancestors’ journeys and share some often uncovered stories we hope you’ll be intrigued by! A great learning and exploring experience for people of all ages and backgrounds.
