Weather Clock

Ready to take your Arduino skills to the next level? This two-day intermediate workshop is perfect for those who’ve completed a few projects or attended our beginner workshop.

We’ll delve into more advanced coding concepts, explore new components, and introduce you to development boards beyond Arduino. The ultimate goal? Building your very own internet-connected weather clock to take home!

This workshop takes place over two days:

  • Wednesday 15 May 2024 10:00-16:00
  • Thursday 16 May 2024 10:00-16:00

Please note: you are signing up for both days.

What you’ll learn:

Day 1:

  • Board Manager & ESP32: Learn about managing different boards and explore the capabilities of the ESP32 development board
  • Advanced coding: Master topics like I2C communication, working with accelerometers, and controlling LCD displays through code
  • Essential electronics: Deepen your understanding of electronic components like capacitors, diodes, and how data types impact coding
  • Pushing limits: Explore multiplexing, registers, and the basics of ESP32 WiFi connectivity

Day 2:

  • Intro to web development: Get introduced to HTML, the foundation of web pages
  • APIs & weather data: Learn how to call APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to access weather data over the internet
  • LED mastery: Work with addressable LEDs to create custom icons for your weather display
  • Connecting it all: Put your skills together by connecting your ESP32 to Wi-Fi, retrieving weather data, and displaying it on your custom LED weather clock

Who’s this for?

  • 18+
  • Creatives interested in learning to work with hardware
  • Coders looking to branch out into physical computing
  • Some understanding of code and Arduino is required. If you are unsure if this is suitable, you can attend our Introduction to Physical Computing with Arduino Course

What do you need to bring?

  • A laptop that can connect to the internet
  • Please download www.arduino.cc before the workshop. If you struggle to download it please arrive 15 minutes earlier and we will be able to help you
  • If you do not have a laptop, we can lend you one to use during the workshop. Please let us know when you sign up if you need to borrow a device
