Review: Disney On Ice ‘reminds us of the hero inside each of us’

This November, you could swim with Ariel through the majestic city of Atlantica, wade the Motuni waters with Moana, watch the floating lanterns with Rapunzel and Flynn, witness a tale as old as time with Belle and her Beast, and build a sentient snowman with Anna and Elsa – all from a seat at Manchester’s AO Arena, with Disney on Ice.

Featuring five outstanding acts, finding your hero has never been such a hard choice; watch as each performer presents magic through song and dance and reminds us of the hero inside each of us. The incredibly talented performers make dancing on ice look easy, as they glide and jump about effortlessly on the ice whilst telling the characters’ classic stories with ease.

The show has the perfect balance of nostalgia for adult viewers and pure exhilaration at seeing your heroes a few feet away from you, for the little ones; throughout the night, I found myself completely belting out the classic Disney songs alongside my friend’s little girl, who was absolutely over the moon at seeing Ariel and Sebastian gliding about in front of her eyes. 

With an exceptionally designed set that recreated everything you knew and loved from the films, the performers gracefully glided around the obstacles. They interacted with the props effortlessly whilst they presented the characters’ stories with magical flair. Beautifully designed costumes complement each performer’s role whilst supporting their unique skating routines; appearances from Maximus the sensible horse and Sven the adorable reindeer will have you immersed in their movements along the ice as the performers carry out synchronised skating to move the large costumes around. 

The performances boast the perfect balance between classic Disney and modern Disney, with appearances from the dynamic duo themselves, Minnie and Mickey, along with Goofy and Daffy to get the show rolling; modern Disney did not disappoint as it brought heroic performances from the gregarious Maui to the lovable Olaf. 

Though the show is undeniably a treat for the kids, you can’t deny that hearing ‘under the sea’ or ‘be our guest’ still has you uncontrollably singing along.
