A little bit of what you fancy does you good, and that’s certainly true when it comes to food (or so we like to tell ourselves).
Even chefs can’t resist the odd indulgence, from spam on toast to ham and ketchup butties or jelly and ice cream.
Now, in honour of our less proud moments (and our weekend hangover food choices), Manchester’s Six by Nico is launching a ‘Guilty Pleasures’ menu inspired by our favourite comfort foods.
The £32 six-course tasting menu has a few twists, of course.
The menu starts with ‘Spaghetti Bolognese’ – but this one’s made with octopus and pork, Sardinian pasta and aged Pecorino cheese foam.
‘Straight from the Can’ sees ceviche of tuna served with pickled watermelon, Tokyo turnip, bonito, Japanese dashi jelly and avocado puree.
A ‘Lamb Kebab’ is next, the spiced belly of suckling lamb served with pickled white cabbage, rose harissa emulsion and cucumber chutney, followed by ‘Fish Supper 2.0’ – scrabster cod with caramelised cauliflower, curry sauce, caper and raisin.
The next main is ‘Nico’s Fried Chicken’ with a crunchy crumb, leg roulade, barbecued corn, hen of the woods mushroom and black garlic emulsion.
Finally, ‘Nutella with Waffles’ is made up of chocolate and praline cremeux, sour cherry and stroopwafel and served with creme fraiche.
A vegetarian alternative six course tasting menu is also available, which includes ‘Spaghetti Hoops’ (courgette and roasted tomato, anelli pasta rings and aged Pecorino foam), along with a spiced halloumi version of the kebab.
“One of life’s greatest pleasures is eating wonderful food, and with Guilty Pleasures, we invite our customers to take a trip down a delicious, greasy memory lane,” says chef Nico Simeone.
“Our new six-course menu is packed with food that we all secretly love, from ‘junk food’ favourites and hangover cures that we can’t live without to comforting foods that we feel ashamed to eat.
“It’s pure indulgence at its best one mouthful after the other”.
‘Guilty Pleasures’ will run from Monday 20th September to Sunday 31st October 2021 at Six by Nico, Spring Gardens, priced at £32 for six courses with an additional wine pairing for £27. Bookings are now open at sixbynico.co.uk.
