The top ten things Mancs have Googled in 2019

For an idea of some of the conversations that have dominated Manchester this year, look no further than Google’s annual Year in Search list.

Well, the results are in. And it seems like we’re all a bunch of couch potatoes. Fantasy fiction loving couch potatoes, mind.

It’s fair to say that, compared to the rest of the UK, our results have got a little more spunk.

But looking over this, the general consensus I think we can all agree is Manchester needs to watch a little less Netflix and get out a bit more in 2020.

Game of Thrones

We can hardly claim the obsession surrounding Game of Thrones‘ penultimate season to be unique to Manchester, but that didn’t stop us going wild for the fantasy series.

Renowned street artist Akse_P19, known for chronicling pop culture icons in larger-than-life murals around the city, compounded on the city-wide obsession by painting this amazing portrait of Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) in Stevenson Square.

We dread to think how many fans risked their necks standing in the bus lane to get a photo of this one.

Cricket World Cup

There was one sporting event that England triumphed in this year, and we had the honour of hosting it right here in Manchester.

That win against New Zealand will likely go down in Manchester history, as will the Aussie reporter who accidentally paid £55k for a beer.

Avengers Endgame

Avengers Endgame was, without a doubt, one of the biggest films of 2019. Nominated for multiple critics’ choice awards, we seriously doubt that this is the last we will hear about the epic blockbuster.

Thanos

The hit Marvel film makes its second appearance on the top 10 most searched list, thanks to super-villain Thanos. He also seems to have dominated search terms, not just here but across the UK.

Rugby World Cup

A particularly surprising one, considering Manchester is such a notorious football city. Red, blue, who?

Chernobyl

HBO and Sky Atlantic’s retelling of one of the worst nuclear disasters in history was a huge hit with UK viewers this year. ‘How to watch Chernobyl’ was also in Google’s top 10 ‘how to’ searches for 2019 across the country.

Notre Dame

Earlier this year the world watched on with horror as iconic cathedral Notre Dame burnt in Paris. Notre Dame was also the top news event search over the past 12 months.

Captain Marvel

Are we obsessed with superhero movies in Manchester, or what? Perhaps it’s rubbing off, as Manchester’s Northern Quarter has been a hive of Hollywood activity this year.

It was recently used to double as New York for major new superhero movie Morbius starring Matt Smith and Jared Leto, as well as for new Sky drama Intergalactic.

Michael Jackson

Lest we forget, Channel 4’s Leaving Neverland documentary on Michael Jackson was a huge one this year and led many of us to question whether it was still ok to listen to his music. Surprisingly, this one didn’t make it into the UK’s top ten results.

James Charles

Last but not least, coming in at number ten is MUA and Youtube personality James Charles. We didn’t know who he was without Googling, either.

The American beauty Youtuber apparently brought Birmingham to a standstill earlier in the year when 8,000 fans turned up to see him open Morphe there.
