Wet, wet, wet: Manchester braced for more torrential rains and thunderstorms this weekend

Umbrella manufacturers and retailers rejoice. There’s more rain on the way.

It’s just over a week into what might be our wettest August ever, but Manchester’s already bracing itself for more torrential rains and thunderstorms over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a severe yellow weather warning for north west England and is forecasting torrential rain and thunderstorms.

It kicked off in the early hours this morning with heavy and persistent rain

The forecast is for a brief respite on Friday morning, with heavy rain due to clear northwards, but this is expected to be followed by blustery showers, bringing the risk of hail and thunder.

From then on it will only get wetter with thundery downpours expected to arrive on Saturday, followed by a risk of strong winds and longer spells of rain on Sunday.

Although rain and thunder aren’t exactly unusual across the region, as we’ve seen already flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, and even cause damage to some buildings.

Some places might become cut off if roads flood and power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

Where flooding occurs, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and sudden flooding could also lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
