From the guys behind the Northern Quarter’s Dry Bar and Didsbury’s The Violet Hour comes Pen and Pencil, a trendy New York-themed eatery and bar in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
“the picture-perfect
place for the NQ’s
hip locals to relax,
meet, and get
creative…”
Situated on the corner of Hilton St and Tariff St, Pen and Pencil takes its inspiration from a notorious mid-20th Century bar on New York’s East 45th Street and is eager to offer the picture-perfect place for the NQ’s hip locals to relax, meet, and get creative whilst enjoying some rather good food and tipple.
Pen & Pencil opens early for brunch at 10am and offers everything from American pancakes, Mexican omelettes and steak and eggs to Philly cheese steak bagels and corned beef hash – complete with 2 poached eggs! Wowza. Their freshly roasted Ellanos coffee is a combination of Brazilian and Central American beans with a sweetened, aromatic flavour and is sure to go down a treat with coffee lovers.
Sandwiches and salads also feature on the menu so their offering really does cater to everyone. The evening menu includes small plates and larger dishes with an international flavor such as Lebanese scotch egg with tahini, pork and chive dumplings, and surf & turf, which consists of tender beef short ribs accompanied by popcorn shrimp, house rosemary chips and coleslaw.
On the cocktail front, these guys know the score. Created in-house, their long list of concoctions features a pistachio shell infused Aylesbury Duck vodka with espresso and cardamom as top of their list. Bartender Mark’s recommendation, The State Flower, hit the spot with its fresh Portobello Road gin, habanero infused watermelon puree, lemon and soda – served tall with lots of ice, so fruity it could almost count as one of your five a day. We wish!
The beer and ale selection also doesn’t disappoint, too. The bottles and cans section is 32 strong, including NQ favourites such as Camden Pale Ale and Anchor California Lager there’s sure to be something at this local boozerto whet your whistle.
